Bring gun it becomes a game after 8-9am Sat morning. I launch during the week and run solo. Your Boat looks great. Rick

Wow, leave it to someone on this website to take something so far out of text, looking fo an arguement!!!!! I guess youve never been stopped in south florida by a water cop. And yes when i go on the boat i like to have two or three beers, when im on the boat alone. And try telling the cop whose looking for his quota for the month that. You know what why dont u go have twelve beers and put your boat in at black point!!!! You got your arguement. Are you happy?

there was a Customs & Immigration dragnet last weekend at Matheson, not sure if it will continue this weekend or not, they were boarding without asking permission, so if you have any issues with that, I wouldn't go there...

They like to use the lobster season as an excuse to bombard boaters. Yeah..we're just checking for shorties but while were here, show us all your coastguard gear, take this field soriety test on a wobby boat, bend on over...

they were asking for ID on every person onboard each vessel
if you didn't have one, you had 2 minutes to produce one
the guy right next to me in a new 32 Concept was arrested on an outstanding Federal warrant...
they were making notes on EVERY boat they checked, if it came back later with more or less people than it left the dock with, you were taken to the side for an explanation, and it had better be good chatter where the other people were, or why they didn't return.... if you returned with more people than you left with, you were in deep doo-doo...
they also siezed one boat for altered HIN
they also had two more boats off to the side when I left, that didn't have engine serial plates...
they also siezed one stolen trailer...

Where was this? A week ago they had a boat at dinner key stopped had 3 men in cuffs they were border patrol. I have no serial numbers on one of my engines but its still up in De should I not bring that down? Rick

Matheson Hammock...
I can't advise how to handle your missing serial number plate... with the rash of boat/engine's stolen around here, they are a tad touchy when you can't prove it's legit...
oh, and last Friday they also got a boat at the same ramp with over 100# of blow, in a poorly concealed compartment..

(How can I produce ID if it is at my house)?
The Coast Guard have pulled me twice, (well not pulled, we were floating/drifting), and both times asked me what we were doing there (WTF??) isn't it obvious? and asked if I had a picture ID, (I never carry my wallet, I live ON the water, and don't have to drive on the road)
I told them that I didn't have one, and there seemed to be no problem, and the second time they pulled us, they were very nice and only wrote the five boats a yellow paper saying that we had been checked.
If we get pulled again, just show the paper, and unless I am doing something really wrong, they will go away.

I wasn't looking for an argument. But it is safe to say that too many people are out there drinking more than they should and this is one of the reason they do this from time to time. How many stories do we hear down here of boating accidents (some fatal) involving alcohol or drugs? WAY TOO MANY. I look at it like this, those cops are out there doing us a favor by weeding out the trash. I for one would love for there to be far fewer drunks out on that bay. I for one have no problem showing up at a ramp where they are doing a checkpoint...... I have nothing to hide.

yeah not near as often as the gungho jerks that harrass us law abiding citizens without provocation (and the reasoning behind this post, yeah!) ...give it a break... you must be a cop or excop?
not everyone is guilty as you would have us!!

Am not a cop nor an ex-cop. I'm just sick of all the druggies and alcoholics destroying our image as boaters.
I have been pulled over three times in 25 years. I am a marine mechanic and am on the water nearly every day. (There are some here that will attest to that).
I can understand people being miffed about getting pulled over or boarded "for no reason", but maritime law allows an officer to stop you for no reason. Most officers I know won't bother you if your'e operating safely and within the law.
If you think this type of crackdown is unfair, well that's your opinion. My opinion is that it helps get the idiots off the water. I'd like to see stricter BUI enforcement.
I guess this type of opinion isn't popular here.

unless you have concrete proof a *quota* system exists, you need to delete that.... my SIL is a Metro DC cop and no ticket *quota* exists in that department...

because people are sick and tired of getting ****ing harassed when they are trying to relax! step outside your little world and go do something, you'll soon see WHY public opinion is more and more against these a-holes. they are everywhere, and looking for any excuse to fine you. If they catch a human smuggler or drug runner while racking up the dollars for the city, then its just a feather in their cap.

This is understandable, especially here in South Fla. Smugglers come in all the time from Haiti, Cuba and the Bahamas smuggling people in. In any other thread, the LEO's checking ID's would seem like a good idea to keep unwanteds out of our country. But in a thread like this, it is considered a "hassle"
I'm sure there are other reasons why the officer wants to see ID's such as looking for people with outstanding warrants, underaged drinks and other things......

Like I have said, I have been pulled over (in a boat) three times in 25 years....... and I'm on the water just about every day. The last time I got pulled over was a year ago for running on plane outside the channel. The officer pointed out my mistake, asked to see my safety gear and told me to be more careful and to have a nice day.
I do relax.....

last 6 times I had the bass boat out, 3 I have been stopped. no ticket, no explanation for why I was stopped. the other 3 times I wasnt stopped was because I didnt see a FWC officer.
Like I said, myself, and alot of others are sick of their intimidation tactics. why else would I have one follow me 10 miles all the way to my house after work today? intimidation... thats it. The difference between me and others is I can drive and not get nervous when I'm followed, most people cant, and end up getting pulled over.

I don't care how good you THINK you can drive, if you've been pulled over 3 out of 3 times you've been spotted in the boat and now a LEO follows you 10 miles for nothing??... your doing something wrong..

oddly enough I've never been stopped in a "fast" boat...

Around here, they would stop every car on the road if they could. I was stopped by a Florida Highway Patrol on a 49cc Yamaha Zuma scooter :rolleyes: for not using my turn signal on a neighborhood street. He actually fell in behind me a block earlier when I crossed his path at another thru street....he said "I didnt think you had a tag at first" :icon_bs: and he also said he was looking for impaired drivers.
Bottom line is they will stop you if they wanna and find a reason for doing so. (I gave him a reason, no blinker) and it's even worse on the water.
It looks like generating revenue is more important than catching criminals.

Checkpoints set up like that should prevent more people from drinking a twelve pack on the water then getting in the truck to tow the rig home. It is a simple thing to deal with. Now, that said, I have not dealt with anyone you have back there. The guys out here are not the best in the business, agreed on that. As far as the Field Sobriety Tests, on a boat they should only be doing HGN (eye test), which is very accurate irregardless of body movement.
mickeyjr: pre-textual stops (no turn signal, no license plate light, etc...)are common and if a ticket isn't written that look at it as that. Unless they are being dicks (in that case a little different story) about it its a couple minutes out of your time to deal with it.
That said, there are people in the LE world that are dickheads and just write tickets for that reason. I'm not defending them. But if you get stopped for "BS" reasons it is part of the job looking for people that are criminals (good reason to run for warrants, check dui, etc...). If you don't do anything really bad then no worries, you will be on your way shortly. But that said you should be treated as respectfully as you treat them.
I know I'm probably going to get flamed for this but whatever, an attempt to explain a little...

Nah, you make a good point. It's never safe to be driving anything around when you've drank too much. Nothing wrong with a couple of beers tho, but you know what I mean. I think the main complaint is the random, sometimes meaningless, stops. Most people are upset becase rampant crimes are being committed all around the US but it seems (to us) that lots of LE are more interested in writing tickets and collecting the revenue from regular Joes than actually fighting "crime". I've got some good buddies in law enforcement and they can't stand the "pricks" who seem to give all of them a bad rep. It's just the same as the idiot boaters who have no idea what they're doing giving everyones else a bad rep.

They don't seem to hassle us out West here as much as back East IMO. But because of the "when they do", I've just decided that if I'm the driver, I'll be sober for the day. When I ride with someone else, they MUST remain sober, and I'll do the drinking. When we get off the water and head to the bars, then it's on for all of us. :)
It just isn't worth giving them a reason or excuse. Easier to stay sober for the daylight hours (on the boat) and do the partying later. Plus, if I'm responsible for others on my boat, I want to be sober. Just my $.02
