Can anyone tell me if a Mercury Sportjet 175 has or needs a poppet valve?
I cannot find it in the service manual diagrams for the Sportjet 175 but it shows up in the service manual for other outboards of the same size.
All the manual shows in the exploded diagram is a cover plate and a fitting that goes to the top of the block.

Thanks for any help!

No, the Mercruiser Sport Jet powerheads do not use a poppet like the outboards. They just have the cover plate and a gasket.

Get the oil injection gone from it and pre mix. Mine stripped the gear and stuck a cyl at 8 hrs on the meter. Merc SUPPOSEDLY had a recall on it (mine's a '98) but I didn't get it and I bought mine new. If you hear the horn it's too late.

Did that already after reading many horror stories on this forum including yours. :) Thanks
