Is anyone familiar with the older Checkmate models? I am looking at an 1985 18 foot that the current owner claims was made by Checkmate and was called a Stallion. It is actually a semi-tunnel. It has an enclosed transom that is raised about six inches or so and has a small wraparound Plexiglas's windshield. Not sure if these were hand laid hull's and unfamiliar of what speeds these were capable of. The current owner has one with a B/P and claims speeds of mid nineties and more with a higher pitched prop. Is this a boat Checkmate produced? Upon looking I could only find Gambler that produced a Stallion so is there such a thing? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, CE

The boat was not made by Checkmate. It was made by Maritec, this is the same company that now currently makes Gambler bass boats and Sterling and Shearwater saltwater boats.

It is not a Checkmate.

Does The Boat Have A 2 Liter 175 Merc. On It. Is The Boat In Lakeland, Fl., Or Does The Owner Fly Jets For Living. If So The Boat Came From St. Cloud, And It Is A Handful, And It Look Like It Rode Bad. Saw The Boat On The Chain Of Lakes In Winter Haven Last Year. Bobby

No the boat is from Georgia. It is similar to the one pictured but the transom is higher and comes forward about 24 inches or so. There is a rear back seat that meets it and has two buckets up front. It also has a 6 inch wraparound windshield and is not a center steer as the one pictured. I saw the same boat on boat trader a while ago that had an 04 Opti 175. Not sure if this was the one mentioned or not.The marina selling it was asking 14.5K. They claimed Checkmate not Stallion race company whatever that meant? Did research on line and could only find Gambler with that make. Trying to decide if I should spend gas $ money (Diesel) to look at it or not. Thanks for the help, CE

nobody came up with any money, seems to be a reoccuring theme. It's still for sale if someone wants it. I want to get me one of them new fangled q-shots that everyone is raging about.

project 8 is hitting the water tomorrow and hopefully(fingers crossed) racing this weekend.

I can get you some specs on the v8. I know the exhaust ports are very tall in it. 1.460 the rest I can not remember.

I'll shout at the old man for ya and see if he hears me.

The boat I am looking at is not 14.5K. That boat was advertised on Boat Trader and listed as a Checkmate. I wish I had saved the add. Anyway it had a newer model 175 Opti-Max and the boat looked show room new but at 14.5K way overpriced. This hull design appears to be a semi tunnel not a full tunnel and is quite wide and not very deep. The owner said the hull was built in 85 and was hand laid and is powered by a 2.4 B/P Merc. Guy is asking $6K. Just trying to sort out some history on this hull before I spend the gas to look. Thanks again, CE
