View Full Version : Viper Pipkorn Proto?
69 Hydro

Hello all, first time poster here. I have a 69' Hydrostream Viper and the last digit in the hull number is "P" as in 15 VI 2192 P. Can anyone tell me if this means proto? Pipkorn? some kind of date code? any info would be greatly appreciated. I've tried Hydro, the registry, and a few others but no one can give me a straight answer. See my profile for a few photo's.
Thanks much, Troy

Welcome to the board. Early Hydrostream history is a little fuzzy, so your question may never be answered for certain. I copied this from the Registry, and matches what little I know. I don't think the design existed in 1969, but I am by no means an authority.
<TABLE cellPadding=6 width="77%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%">The Viper was developed from 1971 - 1972. It evolved from the highly successful Ventura (http://www.hydrostream.org/Specific%20Models/Ventura.htm) model. In Pipkorn's own words, "we took the Ventura, bobbed off a couple of feet from the nose, and lopped off the rear corners to get the boat to conform to Class E sport boat racing." It obviously worked...Pipkorn took the 1977 World Championship in Class E sport boat racing. The deck designhttp://www.hydrostream.org/Specific%20Models/Viper4_small.jpg (http://www.hydrostream.org/Specific%20Models/Viper4.jpg) got a makeover too. Howard's brother, an artist, was impressed by the design of an old http://www.hydrostream.org/Specific%20Models/YF102A_DeltaDagger_small.jpg (http://www.hydrostream.org/Specific%20Models/YF102A_DeltaDagger.jpg)airplane: the Delta Dagger. He sketched up a concept design which was influenced by the flared wings of the Delta. Taking it one step further, Pipkorn utilized a concave shape in the bow area which not only looked good, but also added strength and continued the tremendously strong hull design. "I wanted to create a style that was recognizable from across the lake. With one look I wanted you to know that it was a HydroStream," Pipkorn said. I don't think there is any question that Pipkorn achieved that! You can literally identify a HydroStream from a mile away - in looks as well as the way it flies.

How did you get into the Hydrostream Registry "Models" section? I have been trying for months, with no luck. I click on "Models", and a blank page shows up. I figured that this site has been down for a while.
Does anybody know what is going on with this site? Thanks.

I've been sneaking around there for a few years and yes, I think its a part time site. Models used to work, now other areas are dead.

the viper is a 1972, not a 1969
15 VI is for 15 viper, #219 1972 production, in 1969, h.s. built 16PA's (panthers)

If you cant see the models page or the home page try Firefox. I just tried to use IE7.0 and it doesn't work. Firefox 2.0.0.16 worked okay.
