I doing my first reed replacement on an outboard. It's a 1989 225le Evinrude with Boyeson reeds in it that I'm replacing. Should I use blue loctite or some other med. strength thread locker on the reed cage screws as Boyeson recomends? I know people on here say not to use it on a Merc. Thanks in advance for any help. Boyeson also recomends to go .010 richer on the idle jets if you have a foot throttle, do you guy's agree with this? btw the boat is a 17' foot Panther with a 6" manual jackplate, the motor has solid mounts, a nosecone without a low water pickup, just the two top holes filled, gutted airbox and spins a 26" raker at 6000 to 6200rpm. I bought the motor with these modds used and am just trying to get the best speed, ski, tube setup fot it also. The propshaft is about 2.5 inches below the pad right now.

Jets, Never heard of jetting changes being needed for for plastic reeds alone.

Motors (that i've done) normally run lean at idle with Boyesen reeds and if you doi not richen them up they will sneeze at idle and burn a reed.
They are very sensitive to heat and "ONE" sneeze will burn one!

I used blue loctite on mine.
Never had one run lean on the idle just because of reeds. But that is just on my junky assed antiquated Xflows. ;)
Boyesen recommends richening them so it won't burn them when idling when the motor is not yet up to temperature. They recommend to go 5 sizes (if I remember right) richer on the idle. After I did that, idle quality was crap. I am going to go back to stock next time I go through the carbs. My first set of fiber reeds were Land and Sea. They lasted 5 seasons with out a jet change.

Thanks guy's. I'll check the carbs and see how rich the idle circuts are.
