Trying to finish the project before the end of summer. I have some set up question. Current set up is EFI OMC V-8 with a 1.62 sportmaster lower 4 inch set back.

Dose it need more or less set back

How high should I set the motor

What would be a good prop to start with

Thanks in advance,

You might PM Speedracer ,hes running the same combo 22talon/V8 ,I think he runs mid 90s with a mild port job .

I'd say 10" set back and 22" or 24" prop. Most people run cleavers on these boats but I think a round eared prop would be a good combo. I have a 22 Talon w/twin 2.4. Better yet check with the guy that has that combo.:smiletest:

Have not finished breaking it in, ran it up to almost 6500 rpm truning a 30 RE-3 was still pulling. has a ton of torque. I am sure that it will run well over 100mph when I finsih with set up and find the right prop

Was this the motor that was finished in Wayne's shop this spring?

That is a very cool setup!! Set back is usually less the heavier ya go with the motor. You can usually run a higher engine hight also because of the weight at the transom making your hull generally lower in the water at rest and at speed. not much higher but at least an inch. what your doing is trying to re balance the hull to its designed fulcrum point or Center of gravity. An example is on an Allison XB2003 with a 3.0lt 250xs the ideal set back for one I know that runs 100 is 4 inches and runs the propshaft 1-1 1/4 above the pad and really likes the way she handles. He is a very experienced Allison owner and knows what hes doing. The usual setup with a 260 2.5 is 10-12 inches of setback and even to no higher usually than 1/4 above but even is the majority of set ups. So the difference in weight between the 250xs and the 260 2.5 is about 6-7 inches of set back and 1/2 inch higher on an Allison xb2003. Based on those numbers will give you an idea of the principles involved and with a normal good setup with a single engine like a 300x or xs on a 22 Talon calculate the percentages difference with your V8s weight. If ya really want to get technical also calculate your weight at the helm or the usual load you carry. Tunnel hulls fulcrum is normally just aft of the helm. You might want to contact talon and find out the measurements of this point. The fellow from Aromarine Research may have these points and assist you in determining the best setback or close to it. So once you know of a good set up with a motor thats as close to yours as possable go from there. As far a props a cleaver or Drag4 have good stern lift so i would think that is the type of prop you will be looking for. Ya cant try to many props as they say. Good luck I cant wait to hear how it all works out for you. PM Jimboat and see what he has to say this is a special project and he may give ya some valubale advice.

Stitch, Yes this was the motor that was at MAD EFI probably one of the last motors Wayne worked on. He bored and stroked it he told me that it should be about 4.4 liter.

550-560 seems to be the number that's floating around. I plan to rent a scale when I finish building up my motor. I'll take a pic of it hanging.

From what I've gathered 5.5 inches off the already 10" that the talon has works well with the V8. I may need a little more on my 21 as I sit further forward than you but I'm going to start there.

PM Berdes here on S&F. He's runing a 22 Talon with a 300XS black motor. That motor I think is 535 lbs. Before that it had a 300 Promax but according to Wildman they weight the same.

Well thats not near as much as I would have though. Thats good then for setups because you can use a comparable engine as a guideline for setback. I thought this was new territory.http://forums.screamandfly.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif I sure love how she sits on the back of that 22. Wasnt the OMC V8 the engine the SOB world record was made with also?
