I've got a Cougar 21MTR with an early 90's 2.5 carb motor. I normally run 74/76 at about 5900 with a 14x 26 chopper depending on trim. I've had a couple of instances where it would barely run up to 4800 very sluggishly then instantaneously would remedy itself. No misfiring; plugs are fine; new stator and trigger recently. Fuel lines, filters and holly electric fuel pump set at 4-1/2 lbs. just installed. Being an intermitent problem, it's hard to pinpoint. Does anyone out there have any idea what causes it and remedies?

Check and clean all your grounds.

Make sure it's not a tach. problem... you should be able to distinguish the drop in RPM!

Make sure battery is HOT ( over 12.5 volts NOT running ) and over 14 running. Low voltage can make one lazy..Also 4 1/2 lbs at the carb IMO is a bit low I'd bump it to 5 to 5 1/2 PSI at the bowl and see if there was any difference..Seperate and clean the 7 pin key switch harness and use an ecto knife to spread the male terminals so that they contact the female with more tention..

Good luck,
Jay
