Bought a remanned merc 200. Had my merc certified mech install it. Added new gas and added oil to the gas. along with new oil in the reservoir. Ran it less than three hours. motor stopped. Found a piece of one of the piston rings. when tearing motor down. We know it's not a lubrication problem. water pump was and is working fine. so was it installation? I think it was a used piston. Any ideas? What would cause this type of failure on a supposedly remanned motor?
Thanks.

Hard to say without examination, but dislocated ring locating pins are a common problem and cause the kind of damage you described.

could you explain that in a little more detail? What are the ring locating pins and how could they become dislocated?

yes it does have a warranty, I have to send the engine back. They said they would evaluate it. I am hoping I don't have any problems with them. I wanted to have an independant third party check it but they said that would negate the warranty.
So I have to rely on them. Seem's to me it's either a bad piston (used) or improper installation. or both!

it is a ify area!!! i hope they cover it.. if i is a well know manufacture they will.. i had one start coming loose at 20 hours of use... i tore it down because of another problem and it was just starting to get shinny from touching the cylinder wall... i had them all top pinned... i have 3 hipo motors and they are all top pinned.. one stock 175 that is not.. but it hasen't ran in three years.. it seems to happen more with the high rpm motors!!!!!!!!
this may not even be your problem!!!!!!!! it is more common than people think though!!!!
