Ok guys, I have a 1986 200hp block with a 91' mid, and an internal trim unit. I seized her up, went to take her apart, and didn't think so much about how re-wire things back together until I realized that I needed to trim her up before I swapped powerheads when I moved the boat. So here are my wiring questions:
1) Pos from battery goes where? I had it to solenoid, yes/no?
2) Black lead from solenoid goes to??? Starter?
3) There is a thin red wire from maybe my throttle (not one that plugs in), the one that attaches to a screw somewhere, how about that one?
4) In the back where the heads are, there is a red with a fuse, where does that attach to?

When I attempted to trim her up, there was a little smoke coming from the (what they appear to be) 2 solenoids in the back in between where the plugs are. The engine was creeping up ridiculously slow, and I had to press down for her to go up - wtf did I do there? Sorry in advance if my lingo is not up to par. Any help at all would be appreciated

#1 solonoid
#2 starter
#3 with positive from battery on solonoid

Thanks t-rex, that is what I did - and something is still f'ed up. The black that goes to starter, is it where the screw sticks out on the starter itself, or does it attach to one of the bolts like the black from the battery? What is the trim feed? Is that where there are 3 attachments on a rectangular piece with a red, then 2 yellows? I have 4 red wires going to that. Cant find the problem, any suggestions on why there is smoke, opposite direction happening? I just need to get the engine up, what can I do?

If I understand what you are describing correctly, the two rectangular boxes with the yellow and red wires are your regulators. The reds from those should go to the starter solenoid with all of the other red wires.

The black from the solenoid goes to the side of the starter like you described, NOT where the black from the battery hooks up.

In the back, I'm assuming what you are calling "trim solenoids" are actually relays. They are kind of square about the size of ice cubes. If they are smoking when you operate the trim, you have something shorting.

Do you have a shop manual?

It goes up/down now with no smoking......the only thing, up goes down, and down goes up! Which ones do I have to switch to make that happen - sorry guys, I am jackass with anything electrical!
