View Full Version : Mercury Tech 2.4 kill switch

I don't why it seems my boat never had one, but the kill switch for a 84 2.4 disconnects voltage from the ignition, or grounds the magneto. I need to put one in, is it the purple wire to disconnect? Thanks for the help.

No magneto here, these are ADI systems (powered by the stator), the 12 volt side of the system is separate from the ignition circuit. All ignition power is generated by the stator, 12 volts is only used to spin the starter and run accessories. You kill the engine by grounding the switch boxes. It should be the black wire with yellow stripe to ground, to kill the engine. Merc started changing color codes around those years, kill wire used to be orange on early V-6's. I would double check the wire color at the mercury switch to be sure.

Hey, it's an old motor;).
I didn't mean to suggest applying 12 volts to anything, but disconnect twelve volts from something.
So apparently turning on the key switch only powers your guages and what not. If I were to pull the kill switch, all the instruments would still be powered?

Thats two for black with yellow. I can climb under there and verify the switch activity for that wire with my meter. I thought a kill switch became some kind of safety requirement on boat motors in the 70's. I can't see where there ever was one on this one.

Yep, gauges, trim, etc. When your a dummy like me, and you accidentally wack the switch at 75 mph, it's nice that you can still listen to the radio as you silently coast to a stop:o

Not sure what year that started, you probably have an older control box. It's easy to grab the wire from the ignition switch harness.

i think when they first came out with the kill switch it wasen't on the shifter controls.. it was a seperate switch usually somwhere close to the controls... if you have a old 1/2" hole close to the shifter that was it... use to be a clear plastic looking little boot.. when you pushed it on, it pushed in the button.... when you pulled it off the button came out and killed the motor... i had one like this in a 1977 bass boat... the sucked, because when they got old the plastic boot would hold the botton in.... a lot of people took them off and by passed them. look on the dash too for a 1/2" hole....... i removed mine and put another switch in the hole for something else, so you couldn't tell...... put a real kill switch in.....

My motor is an 84, and there aren't any unused holes that I can see, but who knows. I remember as kid at summer camp, the 9hp outboards even had the teather on the kill switch. A real one is in order, any body have a part number or suggested model?
