well i did it , ran my boat aground after hitting something in the river at night. motor is toast overheated, but dealer says comp is o.k. but leakdown is bad. motor will not perform when hot. water pump stopped working due to full of sand. bent skeg and prop. motor seemed to run fine all the way back approx 5 miles at idle with no water coming out of the pee hole.loaded on the trailer fine seemed to have plenty of power.

question is insurance is going to take care of me so they say, do i rebuild this one , or do i replace it witha 2008 etec 115 which i was told shopuld perform pretty much the same other than i will get better fuel milage. help help help. if i rebuild the 140 i will bore it and change the reeds for more power, but i dont know where to get the gaskets and pistons, ect. boring ect. knew where to go in fl , but now i live in virginia. i am pretty confident i can rebuild a v4 i have done a couple of inline 6 mercs in the past and a bunch of car motors for drag racing. any advice with no b.s. would be appreciatted. boat is a heavy 20' center console proline fishing boat

For that size of a boat, a V-6 would be a better choice for a replacement. Personally, for that boat, I'd go with a used '04 or newer 200 or 225 Optimax. You would end up with probably the same fuel economy with a hell of a lot more speed and power.

well that is what i would like to do, but insurance companies dont see it that way. they see 140 max on the coast gaurd rating. that is what i have to deal with . thanks anyway

The e-tec will have better economy and as good acceleration but the 140 in good tune will be faster

if your not looking for the speed go with the etec for the gas mileage, it will give you plenty of power if your looking to only stay around 35mph....they are a good motor overall

The 115 should be able to push that boat fine. The WELLCRAFT V-20 is rated for 235Hp in later years, yet an 85HP will push it on plane, and a 115 will cruise with 4 people on board. As for the 140, they can drive you nuts trying to fix them if your not familiar with em. That's how I learned so much about em, I took on mine as a crusade. Somebody else owned it and brought it to me because nobody else could fix it. He ended up giving it to me because he had already sunk so much money into it. I decided either I was going to fix it, or it would kill me. After 2 engine builds and countless other repairs later I now know the OMC loopers pretty good. If you can swing it and plan on using it much, upgrade to an ETEC or a used 135 OPTIMAX. The 130HP ETEC should also be out soon as well.

There is no comparason between the new technology and the old stuff. New boat motors are like new cars, it's all about the technology, and it's superior hands down. I just dumped a really low hour OMC V-4 carb motor, it had great power, sucked gas like it was .25/gallon generally un-refined. The new fuel injected motor starts instantly every time with a turn of the key sips gas, it's smooth and although it is a smaller HP motor still has plenty of power.
You couldn't give me the old crap.

Then a 135 Opti will be the choice. You have to change all the gauges and controls anyway to go with new stuff..... a 135 Opti is still a 2.5 litre motor..... will make you happy.

V4 140 all the way for me, but the etec is just a great motor and if I had the choice and didn't care about playing with the motor and had only to think about 35 mph the etch is the only answer all around. If you were talking about a 13 or 15 foot go fast I would say the 140 or larger. GO WITH the ETEC you will love the motor and you don't have to look @ a dealer for 3 years and self fogging your all set this winter.
