Minimum power needed for a Euro?

I have a good friend who had his Doral BR wrecked (someone else's mistake) and has his 2003 (I think) Yammy 175HPDI salvaged from it.

Heres where it gets interesting. He bought the boat with the intention of being able to run some speed, and still be able to pull skiers etc. Since the purchase, he has got less enthused about skiing and more into wakeboarding/skyskiing.

He still wants a "speed-boat", but also wants to be able to ski/board etc. so I have started talking to him about replacing his do-all boat, with more specific application boats. Hes already started looking for late model inboard towboats, but he doesnt really know if he wants to put up with having to sell the O/B by itself. Could a 175yammy work on a Euroski? Looking through the classifieds, I have only seen a few with 225 pro-max's, with most being 245/260/280's.

I ask this because I know people have been throwing 150's (promaxes albeit) on Ally's for a few years now.

a euro will work fine with that hp. I know a guy that had a 150 on one
and it went around 80 or so.

I bet an Ally would carry weight better with light power.

I started with a stock old 200 on mine. It ran great as a boat and was consistently in the low/mid 80's. Unfortunately, mid 80's is the speed where you clear the air bubble so the only times I could get the boat to fly is when I pointed it into the wind which got me into the low 90's. Being able to get just to the hop and not power through it was a little frustrating.

The boat will ski well and run well with a 175, but i believe it will be a challenge to get past the hop. if 80 or less and a roomy, forgiving, damn good looking ski boat is all he wants then the answer is yes IMHO as to whether a 175 will do the trick.

edit: I am assuming there is not a limiter on his 175 yammy.

Im sure overall velocity the ally would be more efficient, but would the Euro with 175hp still be able to cruise above the speeds where handling is finicky/the "spray issue" is surpassed?

yes. the sneeze is around 30 mph, and anyone who has driven the euro for a little while seldom gets it because a little throttle and you are past it before it happens.

I just put a 200carb on my euro today and ran it for the first time in a year that I have owned it and its pretty quick, turns on a dime, get out of the hole very quick for what it is, but it does hop a little around 75-80. Over all a really fun boat just need a 300x to make it perfect:thumbsup:

I think I'd rather have a Vking with a 175 then a Euro. A Vking is plenty fast with 175, just stick to calm water. A Vking would make a fine toy towing/go fast boat.

More than 225 HP, then the Euro would be my preference.
