View Full Version : How to pre mix 2 cycle oil?

I'm new to 2 cycle motors and I'm wondering what is the correct way to mix with gas. Can I just dump the oil in an empty gas tank and then fill with proper ratio of gas or does it have to be mixed better than that? Any help appreciated.

If I'm mixing a can full, where the gas pump nozzle will agititate it well, that works.

To fill a big tank, I usually put the quart or whatever of oil I'm going to use in a gas can, add a half gallon or so of gas, shake it up, dump it in, then top it off with the proper amount of gas from the nozzle. It's a bother, but a puddle of unmixed oil laying in the bottom of a 27 gallon tank ain't gonna do the v6 much good.

hope it helps

Thanks much. That helps allot.

I never pre-mixed and never had a problem! The agitation comes from driving down the
road to the boat launch.

I usually put half the oil in, pump 10 gallons, put the rest of the oil in and finish pumping. A full throttle stream of fuel from the pupm nozzle usually is enough to mix the oil. If you have a tank that doesn't accept the fuel at full bore, then external mixing is reccomended.

Dunp fuel in the tank, dunp oil in, start motor, find some big waves quick and it's mixed real well. Now if the hull would just stay together for a change.

Oh, so you just wait to see what breaks first.... the motor from lack of oil or the hull from slammin it :D

I would always put the oil in first, that way the swirling gas mixes it while it is pumped like flabum1017 said. The modern oils mix much easier than regular motor oil did in the old days. The procedure for built-in tanks used to be to mix an equal amount of gas and oil and then pour that mixture through a funnel while filling the tank at the same time. That isn't really necessary now...I would just always leave a gallon or so in the tank so that the oil has something to mix itself with when you pour it in, then pump the rest in on top of it.

Yeah...driving your boat down the road, launching, and then running the boat should mix up your tank just fine.

One note on this though...... If you have adead empty tank, you need to put a few gallons of gas in first, if you put the oil in first, as you add gas, the oil will be pushed into the pickup tube and it will be a biatch to start the motor on 90% oil

How do you remove the oil injector? and alarm.

Let's start another streak of BS and info, premixed.

oil injection removal Merc V6 only
You need part number 43453 if it is available. That retains the pump driveshaft bushing and plugs the hole where the pump mounts. Then remove the oil components and the warning module. You'll also need to remove the fitting that the oil tank pressure hose attaches to and plug the hole in the block.
Order three stickers (37-818029 1), one to mount near the fuel fitting on the motor, one for the dash, and one near the fuel fill fitting on the boat. They'll alert the operator that the gas needs to have oil added. One frequent problem we see here regards the infamous "brother-in-law" that forgets to add oil to the gas and roaches the motor.
You should probably replace the fuel lines where the fitting for the oil T's into the fuel line with a single piece of fuel line.

hope it helps

"Don't forget the oil, dummy", but probably in more diplomatic terms.

The instructions refer to that as a reason for the stickers.

last weekend i ran out of gas on the old rm 250 out on the trail, pushed the bike to the bar we usually fill at on the trail, dumped in my oil, took the gas gas gun and went to pump. no gas?? they were out. had to push the bike another mile to get to a gas station up the road, by that time the carb was full of pure oil!!! put in alittle gas and laid the bike down on the ground and watched the pure stream of blue oil running out the carb vents. once it got clearer i refilled with oil and the correct amount of gas. you can bet i will never dump in oil first ever again on a completely empty tank!!!!

When I was younger there was a neighborhood kid that would drive his dad's snowmobile to the gas station fill it with fuel and pour in the cheapest car oil he could buy and go riding.
It never blew up as long as I knew him.

Back in the old days, the proper oil to mix was sae 30 Non-detergent. 16:1. I still have a 1928 Graham Paige Rototiller that uses that mix. I use modern ashless 2 cycle oil in it, though, at 16:1.

I had the motor rebuilt without the oil injector after seeing the nylon gear on the crank totally destroyed.

If its a 1986 200 and the oil injector is working should I remove the system or keep it. I ran the tank out of oil last week and got the alarm for what I thought was low oil,but after I refilled the tank on the motor and holding tank the alarm still is going only at high rpm? when I am going slow it doesnt alarm . Only when I get going fast does it alarm. I can fig it out. It is makeing me a mad man. smoke is still commming out the exhaust. The temp is fine . any ideas

Either the pump isn't rotating at high speed, (unlikely) or #2 cylinder is not firing at high speed (would notice performance - 20%) or the module is bad. 4th alternative is loose connection vibrating at high speed. 5th is the engine oil resevoir isn't plumb full tight and the switch intermittently makes when you're jumping waves.

If major parts are bad, cheapest alternative is go to premix.

Another alternative is an electric aftermarket from Wisconsin.

I bought a new oil cap sensor for the motors oil storage. I checked the old one by flipping it. It did alarm but when I would move it around it would alarm when it shouldnt. Bad wire due to the cap wires were straped and every time the cap was put on the wires would cork screw. I set it up to unplug before removeing cap. This realy is a temp fix till I spend all the oil 5 gal. in holding tank. In the mean time Im getting parts to remove this crappy set up. I had a omc sea horse same year go due to the vro. bad .so far so good just a week or two before I swap over to premix. They should sell premix at the pump.
