I know this may not be the right place to ask but I figure its worth a shot.

I just reinstalled my two freshly rebuilt 454's into my boat primed both motors and started them. The one sounds fine and oil pressure is ok.

The other motor is reading 54 lbs of pressure on a mechanical oil pressure gauge when spinning the pump with a drill and shaft. But when I start the motor its making a clacking noise. I shut the motor down fairly quickly when i heard this noise. Did I not let it run long enough or should I be looking else where?

Thank you in advance
Ray

Can you better define "clacking noise"?

I and a few others here have built BBCs and other car motors. A rod sounds more like a knock... and it doesn't do that for too long before it ventilates the pan... speaking from experience. :o

It sounds like the valves are making a lot of noise.

:iagree: "clacking" noise sounds like the lifters have not pumped up yet.

...or your valve springs are being over extended and bottoming out.
