I just aquired an older Mercury 1000. The serial number plate is gone. Is the engine serial number anywhere on the motor itself? I found a 7 digit number on the engine where the starter mounts, it is 2681740. Could this possibly be the engine serial number? What year might it be if this is true? What are the differences between the 1000, the 1000SS and the 1000BP? Thanks, Walt

Without looking up the serial number you gave, I would place the motor in the 1968 or 1969 range. The 100SS was a solid state ignition. The 100BP was a completely different mid section. It was a race only mid section and came with the BP or super BP gearcases. Here is a picture of a BP mid and lower.

If that number is stamped and not cast into the block, It's most likely the s/n. Going by Merc that number would make it a 69 engine.;)
