Carb Jetting

I know that when you install velocity stacks you are supposed to up the jet sizes, (which may be the only reason for any performance gain if any at all) , but my question is...... does the same apply if only removing the airbox without installing velocitystacks? and if so, how much to go up in jet size. And also, if removing the airbox without changing jets, could this lead to a lean condition, and possible detonation, melting piston top, etc....This is on a mid 80's 235 crossflow.
