I'm interested in using a Basecoat/clearcoat paint on my boat. Does anybody know whether or not that's advisable? How should I prep the surface?

Thanks,
Carl

I do it all the time. I own a bodyshop and sell Liberator tunnel boats. Here's one I just painted last week. Call me at work and I'll answer your questions. Randy 386-761-8050

Man those are really beautiful!

I'll be down to get that yellow one just as soon as I can figure out how to tell the wife I'm selling the house for a boat.

It seems like everybody I've talked to who has painted boats either used Imron or gelcoat. Obviously BC/CC systems are an excellent option.

Thanks

don't want to butt in on your thread, but i was wondering what the cost of something like this would be. i'm gonna have to do my laser if i ever finish it and was wondering what the materials cost or what a competent paint guy would do it for. gonna do just one color(yellow). really just ballpark cost on materials( i know i can't afford to pay someone). thanks, and sorry lorax for butting in.

how did u do that fade job on the one boat

Both of the flamed boats have that fade. You just have to keep blending colors, adding clear and adding reducer and playing with the air pressure. It took a couple hours to get the fade right. To many people don't take the time and they come out splotchy. Notice the pink flamed boat has a lavender to white fade. It also has violet pearl flip-flop over that. I'm now putting prple pearl flames over the pink.

patchesII Fairly cheap for a single solid color... But I would use the cataylized stuff like some clear coat.

I spent 1 grand on Kandy kolors and primer, everything. Don't know yet if I got the right amount.

WILDMAN Have you painted alluminum with clear?
I'm planning on spraying polished alluminum with adhesion promoter then red and gold Kandies.

The best clear adhesion promoter I've used is called Bulldog. You probably should use a urethane candy, then a good urethane clear. If the urethane candy runs, you're screwed. No way to fix it. Be careful!
