HEY GUYS, I have only posted here about new products on new stuff, but now I finally own a boat that some what belongs on scream and fly....I bought a 1982 Checkmate Enticer 16 1/2 foot with an original yet over rated on the transom 140 johnson???? The original owner bought it from the dealer overrated by 15hp and with the plate modded???? That being a salesman in the industry seems kind of weird...Anyways, my 140 is very carboned up, my techs said to run engine tune through it a couple times, and run it good.....Does that sound correct??? Also wondering if their are any easy low cost things to squeeze out more hp out of this crank rated 140, which means its really a 115 or 120 right??? Sorry for the long post but im excited about it and finally can ask some questions to you all.....Thanks Guys

First off get it decarbed with todays gas you'll stick a ring. Do it as per directions on the side of the can. Run good gas and good oil or it will just carbon up again and thats a quick way to kill it. Their are all kinds of mods but first decarb and post compression numbers. Rick

Focus on set up first, with your existing engine, and then worry about more HP. That's my advise and its free, and worth every penny.
Over rated would apply to a lot of us. It only matters if your insurance company cares.
Get a 4-6" manual jackplate and start buying/selling/trading props.

Thanks alot guys, I have 2 bottles here of engine tune, im gonna do that tomorrow and finish on Thursday, I already put all new ultra lower unit fluid in it, since we are a Evinrude dealer thats all we use is their fluids in bulk. I put the new plugs in, my tech said something about some thermostats that are a pain in the butt in this motor, he called them something else but it sounded like thermostats...not sure, but thats what he will help with, all of the knowledgable stuff. Thanks guys, im gonna tune it up as good as possible, we did compression on it, all were good and balanced, he wants to retest after the tune up and de carboning.....Thanks again,

The thermostats are down the back under the bubble exhaust. I got so fustrated I cut and axcess in bottom cowl and hinged it. They can be got to buts its a bite for sure. Rick

Brannon,
Your checkmate should be a fun ride. While not a high performance boat like a Hydrostream or Allison it should run real good with the right setup. Like David said, concentrate on setup. Your 140 has the best set of performance heads (For today’s fuels) already. Any more compression will risk burning things up on today’s Lamp oil that passes for gasoline.
Get a hold of a 24 raker, I would put my money on one of those for best performance.
Get it ready for the 3 Lakes Shootout!

BRP also makes an additive that you add to the gas called Carbon Guard. If it is really bad, tilt the motor up, do one cylinder at a time, bring the piston up to TDC and fill it up with Engine tune. I call that a "shock treatment".
I think the HP loss to the prop is only 7%.

Once you get the engine decarbed, the XD50 oil has carbon guard in it-a great oil for the old crossflows. I'd be looking for compression the high side of 125-130, if it has the stock heads. Your engine should already have the high porting, large carbs, tight heads, unlimited packs, intake and exhaust stuffers. Not much left, unless you want to bolt on a set of composite reeds. Going through the thermostat housing is a good idea. Make sure the pressure relief valves are whole and not deformed. Also, on the thermo valve body, make sure the two pinholes are open for proper cooling. Test out a good stainless prop and get the engine high enough on the transom, then decide on the best prop pitch. Should be a fun process for you.

they got as much as possible out of the v4 block without resoting to extreems measures. it should pus the boat into the 60s. i had a 115 with the bubble[1978 yr] and it pushed my 15 1/2 mate to colse to 60. i hated the boat for water skiing. it falls off the pad 2/3 thru a u turn and sacres the SH## out of you. tried every thing i couls to correct it but failed and bougth a new boat. the 16 could be a little different. you can step up to a newer 140 with the larger displacement and that could push the boat into the 70z.

Setup Setup Setup...
You will have to raise the motor up, take out alll the un needed weight. If your boat is solid and light then the raker 24 or a 23 renigade will be your best top end wheel. The thing about V4s .. There is always a lot more compromise in your setup to get the best results.

I finally used the boat this weekend, see my 21p stainless old prop is not perfect and all we had at the marina was a new 19p evinrude 3blade, the checkmate got 5100-5300 rpm's,42mph and was definitely slow up top, but see guys i have no idea how much is too much trim, i know the obvious of prop blowout, but im still learining, should i be able to trim it 3/4 up on the gauge??? im trying to find a used prop to try, good thing is the boat is up nort in eagle river, so im gonna meet up with some of the guys in 3 lakes this weekend, anyone going if you have any used props, if you could bring them that would rock, i de carboned it, and have been runnin the snot out of it to clean it out, but if i can get a real 60 mph out of it, i want to......cell-920-295-2069 thanks again guys,
