View Full Version : OMC Gearcase Exhaust Question

Just getting ready to re-install my gearcase on my Johnson (1984 X-flow) and saw a part in the shop manual that my engine did not have. This the exhaust housing transition piece between the mid section and lower unit. The call it the "lower exhaust housing". Detail "A" on page 6-120 of the 1984 shop manual. OMC Part # 0327796.

This was not in the engine when I pulled the lower unit. Hence why the pump housing (and everything else) was covered in thick carbon.

Is the item typically discarded (as a performance change) or is it a must have?

This may have also been one reason I was geeting so much water and exhaust gases up my shift tube into the engine cowling.

Going to look for a used one now.

Any input on this is appreciated.

Many thanks,

Larry

You should definitely put one in,all that heat around the water pump and seals is not a good thing.

Engines with open exhaust of course do not use them. But in your setup there is no disadvantage to not using it.

Agreed water will burn if it hits high temps.. No other material needed.. I saw it once and thats all I needed.

Hey Tom D. Do you ever run on the Mohawk? Can really tell by your signature image, but remember seeing a a Black one (with orange and yellow) flying down through there last year.
