Where do I torch, hammer, and pry - don't want to damage powerhead, don't care about the mid? Thanks.

forgot to mention, penetrating oil. PB blaster is good, might not even need anything else if its a freshwater engine. heat where the studs go through the mid, and keep the nuts on the rear studs slighty so you can pry between them and the adapter. once you get it cracked, slip the pry tool in there so the gasket is between it and the powerhead. Just take your time and you should be able to get it without ruining anything.

someone should kick your ass for telling him that.......

take your time and don't pry it YOU WILL SCREW UP THE BOTTOM OF THE POWERHEAD AND THE NEW GASKET WILL NEVER SEAL IT.........

OK the pb blaster is a great way to start heat may work too.....drill though the mid by the bolts and spray in the hole so it can get a better shot at getting the bolts wet ( with PB) ..tap ....working your way up to beat along side the bolts while letting it hang (some guys put a chain around the bottom of a hoist and legs of the lift to add slight tention) another good idea it to use a rattle gun from the bottom and put it on the bolts.......

try that then use the search your not the first with this problem and it has been discussed in length we can go from there

it doesnt matter dude, you have 2 or 3" of flat steel pushing up it'll never gouge the aluminum that way. Now if you pull down on the handle and hang on it (so the sharp end goes up) then yea it might screw gasket surfaces.

I dont know, maybe I just have more mechanical finesse than most people. :leaving:

Sorry guys, didn't mean to start anything. I've been working on it all day and haven't got very far, but I'm still goin at it. I'm trying a combination of everything you guy's suggested, hopefully it's just a matter of time now. As soon as it comes off I'm gonna start putting it back together on another mid and hopefully bolt it to the boat for this weekend!

Another thing I do is to pull up on the powerhead while the mid is mounted to the boat. Then go in and use the pry bars to rock it side to side.

Powerhead just broke free. Just so everyone knows, my powerhead was really stuck, nothing was working to pull it off. I had a 4000lb hoist and was bending the legs from the pressure. So what I did was get another 4000lb hoist and face the booms torward each other, put metal bars under all four legs, wrapped a chain around the metal bars and through the space between the mid and the clamp just above the lower mounts and locked it together. Put equall pressure on both booms, pump one then the other, and it came right apart with some heat.

Sure was, it popped pretty hard but I was just glad that the mid didn't fall over and destroy the pan. :D Ordering another new base gasket tomorrow and then she goes back together.
