I need to know if theres any way to reduce chining at high speeds? My boat is a 1990 laser kevlar hull 200 gt johnson v hull with about a 12" setback hydraulic lift jackplate running a 23 pitch prop. I know the prop size is probably wrong and i do not have low water pickup to raise the jp up alot? Boat runs 76 mph with current setup but is wild as hell at speed above 65 mph!!! any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

Raising the eng. cured the chine walk on my Checkmate! Will probably work
with yours also!

There are sevaral cures. But first some things need to be done. Raising the engine will definately help if not solve the problem. You can expect to gain 2 to 3 MPH by doing that. You have a stock lower so invest in a Bobs nose cone Low water pick up. there a great "Bang for the Buck". That will allow you to raise the engine and not have the worry about loosing water pressure. It will also delete the possibility of Blow out at high speed. With that done figure on stepping up to a good 14.5 x 26 pitch prop. You can never have enough props to play with:D . Once you get the right set up and prop combination 80's should be no problem without chine.

Just as a check. lay a yard stick length wise from the stern towards the bow on both sides of the v with about 1" of the yard stick hanging past the transom. Note the gap between the hull and the yard stick. This is called Hook Or Hog where I am from. All boats have some. By removing this Hook will also get rid of chine, help the stern break loose so the boat can fly as well as increase speed.

Good Luck!!

No problem. There is a wealth of knowledge to be gained from this site. Just don't ask what type of oil to use:nonod: . And always try to do a search first. There are a great bunch of people on here but they can also be brutal.

12" setback isn't helping anything. Way too much.

Solid mounts?

Properly adjusted dual steering?

Grab the back of the cavitation plate and give it a back and forth shake.

Does the motor shake back and forth?

Sorry for the obvious, I just didn't see that you mentioned that.

Well its 12" when the jackplate is at about 1/4 travel. It's a scissor type made by mercury. When its up im not sure about the excat setback maybe 6" havent been able to run it up all the way because no low water pickup!!! temp alarm goes off!! I am goin to get a bobs nose cone low water pickup then try to go up with it!! thanks for the advise!!

The only cure for chinewalk is driving. all the above mentioned things need to be done to minimize it, but they will never cure it. Chinewalk is the nature of a V-bottom.

personally those scissor jacks scare the hell out of me, but you might be ok.

i agree on the 12"s et back not helping. raising the motor will correct 90% but until you get the LWPU try a 4 bladed trophy. that will correct 40%. a older turbo 2 prop with extra cupping is another cure. props like the laser and tempest can cause a good amount of chime walk on some boats. [ my voyager is one]

I agree 100%. Seat time and learning to drive is the only real cure.

I have a 4 blade ballistic on it now.

Knowing how to drive and properly trim is good. But a properly set up boat is a must. Chining shouldn't have to be corrected with the steering wheel. My Liberator runs 115+ and all I have is one hand on the steering wheel. My Hstream 80+ and I can do the same thing. Solid mounts and dual opposed steering is also a plus.

a liberator is an air entrapment hull of course it doesnt chine walk

Getting the side to side balance of the boat perfected will help out quite a bit in controlling chine walk. The HydroStream Vectors that I have owned were always a handfull to drive with side steering. Center steering helps out quite a bit and I have found that cable / pulley / wing steering is very repsonsive with great feedback. Of course you need to ensure that the basics are tackled first (soild motor mounts, tight seering bushings and yoke splines, etc.) Lots of seat time and testing is needed.

Hope this helps!
