How much is enough? The merc manual and everything i have ever read tells me 30 ft/pounds with locktite on the threads. Replacment bolts from Pro Marine which appear to be genuine sourced from the oem manufacture have a instructinn labaled "important" as follows "30 ft/ pounds and then a 1/4 of a turn". This feels very tight to the point where the bolts feels as though it is about to break.

Any comment out there?

Im Scared...............

Chris ,
This is a VERY debatable subject as you will most likely find out. IMO I don't care for the 30 lbs + method to torque bolts others may or may not I could and can care less.. IF the bolt is brand NEW do as the manufacturer suggests. If this bolt has already been stretch ( used ) I'd go 35 lbs with red loctite and call it good if new bolts weren't available ( I normally change the rod bolts on non high performance rod bolts because of the low replacement cost and the lower grade of the non high performance bolt's lower tensil strength ). Thats a fishing motor rod bolt with 5/16 " head. For the SPS high performance engine rod bolts with the 3/8 " head I torque at 40 ft lbs with red loctite and call it good , never had one break or fail yet. After testing rod bolts at a UL lab a few years ago we found that the non High Performance "pull to break strength" was 40 K and the SPS was 240 K amybe thats the reason the non high performance bolt are $3.00 ea and an SPS Hi Per one is $18.00+ ea....

good luck,
Jay

Sure IF they are the REAL MEAL DEAL SPS rod bolts with the same tensil strength as OEM I would be very interested ( even in bulk ) I DO get them a little cheaper at my Mercury dealers discount but thats about the correct list price that Joe Q. Public pays... Please Contact me or give me contact information for you ...
