replace mid section on 280 merc. take hood and cowl off motor, remove lower unit, unbolt adaptor plate from mid, unbolt mid from clamp, drop old mid, replace with new mid and complete rest of assembly without removing powerhead . is this possible?

On the 200 stuff, you could do that IF the bolts in the lower motor mounts have already been turned around, factory has them so they can't be taken out, (they bump into the motor mount back wall)

I imagine the 280's are the same setup, not sure.

I would still support the powerhead with a lifting ring.

You mabe able to take the yolk off and drop the mid that way, and take the mounts out along with the mid.

Then turn the bolts around for next time.

I learned this trick from John Tiger in Hotboat Magazine, I think they were changeing tuners in between test runs.

280 WOULD HAVE A 1 PIECE ADAPTOR ,NO RUBBER MOUNTS,MOTOR STUDS GO THRU ADAPTOR & INTO MID,CANT REPLACE THE MID WITHOUT REMOVING POWERHEAD:cool:

i was looking at the mid i picked up, it has bolts thru the lower mount, not studs so i can take the bolts out, unbolt the adaptor from the mid and drop the can, but when i checked my motor, it has studs.so i will pull the power head.wasn't trying to save money, just time. this is why i joined s&f the advice you get here is priceless and i appreciate it,thanks, it is like the saying measure twice cut once in other words ask advice from people who know an it might save you from making mistakes

i remove the can from the clamp going to order powerhead and adaptor gaskets just a few questions: first, where the exhaust comes out of the off shore mid, is it square with four holes for bolts to hold something on,is it needed and what is it called so if i need to order it, next do you use locktite or never seize on the bolts an nuts ? (up date)just realized the lower mount slides on the splined shaft thru the clamp, so just taking the bolts thru the adaptor i would have been able to drop the can even if it was studs

thats just for a plate if you want to make quit, you should have lock nuts,so just a little merc grease number 101...

i looked at my motor good:first drop lower unit ,, snap ring holds bottom yoke on, remove it and lower mount comes off with mid, under hood pan wrap around comes off exposing nuts from powerhead thru adaptor plate, remove them, don't have to remove hood pan, three bolts in back from adaptor plate to mid ,remove them an mid should slide off, support powerhead and adaptor an shouldn't have no problems.

never thought of doing it that way:confused: i would not trust the 2 top mount bolts to support the powerhead alone:eek: i recently did a mid, clampbracket & trim swap . powerhead was off in about 15 minutes, was way easy:thumbsup:

yes you can do it that way. leave the powerhead on. drop the gearcase, pull off the snap ring on the yoke and unbolt the 10 nuts from the power head studs. watch your feet cause it can drop right off.
