Mercury 250xs Reliability Qs

Im Intrested In A Boat That Has A 2006 250xs With A Sportsmaster, Ten Hrs On It. Ive Always Had Omcs And One Mercury That Blew Up.(not The Engines Fault.....no Water Seperator). I Now Have Yammy Four Strokes But Would Like To Get Back To Performance, But Reliable Performance. Not Really Intrested In Evinrude/johnson Now. Are The Xs Reliable If Not Abused And Left In Stock Shape? Will They Idle In Gear For Long Periods Without Oiling Up? Can You Put An Open Exhaust On It?. .i Had A V8 And Like The Open Exhaust And Like The Noise. I Hope The Sportmasters Are Better Built Than The V8 Omc Box....................thanks For Any Help.
