Ok I just rigged my boat with a 2001 280. Couple of issues
1. After running it for a short while or starting and stopping for about 4-5 times when I try and start it again it won't start. Checked the fire to the plugs and it's fine. I can hear the fuel pump pressure up and hit the schrader valve and there is pressure in the system. After the engine sits for about 4hrs to a day it will start right up again.
2. My temp gauge says it is running about 170-180 but I can feel the water comming out of the pee tube and it is luke warm and no warning horn. Pressure is about 8-12lbs while running.
This has happened the last two times out. I am replacing the fuel pump as a start....any help would be greatly appreciated..thanks guys.

Might try looking at the TPI setting with an OHM meter, its early in the AM so I might get this wrong but I think I remember you insert a .005" feeler in between the butterfly blade and the horn body closed and check the wires at the TPI it should read .80 OHMS if no adjust accordingly.
Also try a new set of NGK BPZ-8H-N-10 SPARK PLUGS
Check the air barb that feeds the signal to the air censor for obstruction
Also battery MUST have at least 12.5 Volts before its started on over 14 at idle ..
Next if all fails bet your injectors are flooding, a trip to Brucato's will solve that issue, if your injectors haven't been cleaned or serviced since motor was new I'll bet thats the issue..
Good luck,
Jay

Jay, just had the injectors done by Brucato. Replaced the air barb sensor that seemed to solve an issue I had throwing ingintion codes. I will check the voltage from the battery and also check the TPI. Going to put it on the DDT this morning and check codes again. A friend at St. Aug. Marine (good people) is checking codes for me.
Jay, thanks for the QUICK reply...damn guy you should be working in the shop LOL. Still comming to visit your shop the next time I go down and see the grandkids. Thanks again as alyways.

memory failing me, does the choke on a 280 engage everytime. seems there was a fix for this? might be choking when the motor is already warm.

i have friend that has a 280 and it does the same thing. starts and runs perfect from the start but after warm and running some time it is hard to start. his solution is to trim the motor about 45 degrees or greater and crank.

I find that a good starting, idling and running 280 is the norm not an exception.
If a 280 engine is correct and when I say correct I mean have sealing reeds, correct plugs, TPI correct , bores sealing they ALL will idle like a new Chevy Malibu...;) I build them WEEKLY that runs great and idles like a "Tom Cat in a meat market " ...If a 280 doesn't perform flawlessly through the running and idling range there is an issue that can be resolved to achieve a very user friendly engine..
Have a great week end,
