Mercury replaced the two piece with one piece in late 80s on the same engine.
If Merc. can do it... so can you! Does anyone else agree?

You can as long as the head bolt pattern is the same your fine on the switch from 2 piece to 1 piece heads.
CAUTION ! Some of the earlier 2.4 2 piece heads had what I call the bad
( narrow ) head bolt pattern that the head bolt bosses were almost right next to the bores instead of being out on the block edges.
I don't think Mercury made a 1 piece head in the ( bad ) head bolt pattern I spoke about in the above text, but I am by no means a 2.4 expert...
good luck,
Jay

Yep, no 1 piece heads avail. on the old /"bad" first style (cyl. head bolt bosses cast into the cyl. bores) 2.0 and 2.4 motors. But on the later/"good" free standing cyl. bore spread bolt patern you can put on the 1 piece heads as stated above.

Those 'bad' heads had a diamond shaped water cover... can't miss that!

I believe 83 and later 2.4 you can swap the heads. MIKE>>
