ive never driven one but i know the boat you're talking about. you need atleast 20 hp. i had a 11' checkmate with a 20, and it only went about 28mph. depending on your plans for the boat, i would sugguest between 25-45 hp. i would imagine 50 hp is the most you would want to put on a baot that size.

gotboostedvr6
04-29-2008, 04:27 PM
Those hulls don't respond to hp very well.. they are very narrow, and don't like any more then 225 lbs of persons (total) in them.. plus they have issues when you ask them to float with any more then 125 lbs of motor on the back.

o yeah and they chine walk like no other

depending on what you want will depend on your set up.......if you want go fast look for a 15" omc / johnson there are a ton of go fast parts just check out the SST 45 class boats...if it's for the kids stick to a 25 hp max with the 15" mid

fastlane35
04-29-2008, 05:48 PM
ya with a 25 merc, they ran low 40's suppoblsy

my boat is very similar im running a 50hp 2cyl, it ran about 34-36mph with a old 35hp johnson. i ran the 50hp once but with a 11p prop. wasnt much faster up top would pull all the way too the rev limiter. picked up a 14.5p today. so illtest and tune this weekend, hope too get over 50mph..........

ran my boat today with a 14.5" pitch prop. its still slow....did 40mph a few passes "only when the water was rough" other than that itll run about 36-37ish. i have 9 inches of set back and prop centerline to bottom of hull is 8" ????? any ideas. i am going to try and raise the motor this weekend...

LI SUPERBOAT
05-02-2008, 08:43 PM
8" thats crazy ,you need to be 2" off the center line of the beam ,we run a 1' on the big boats start at 2" and see how it runs ,can you take a picture of the set back i would like to see were your set up now ,you should pick up big if your 8' under the beam

fastlane35
05-02-2008, 08:58 PM
yea i woult pick the motor up more and maybee tilt it a little

750sxipro
05-02-2008, 09:09 PM
yeah i ran it today, and when i pulled it from the water is when i realized how low the prop really was, im going to have too move the entire mount plate up or build a different one.....i hope the boat will do atleast 50mph when setup this is the old 35hp that was on it when i got the boat the prop depth shown is about the same as the 50 thats on it now

maybe you guys should look at the 45 class boats beroe you say it gets boring fast....If you wan to go fast in it then use a 45 set up and hang on..those guys run mid to high 50 easy all the time

750sxipro
05-08-2008, 08:34 PM
my boat floats fine, i could add another 100lbs to the transom,40mph will get old way before you burn a tank of fuel. I spent 4-5 months rebuilding my boat and could not wait to take it for a spin "with the 35hp" i went across the lake once "small lake". played with the trim couldnt get it past 35mph so i parked it and took out my jetski instead, "very disappointed". so it sat until i found a 50hp engine, took it out twice so far, runs about 40mph. that got boring after about two laps, so i started jumping wakeboard boat wakes......that was pretty damn fun, and i do understand a properly setup smaller engine/prop combo will give you plenty speed, but whether you are a speed freak or not 40 gets boring in a small boat. my boat should have more speed in it after i jack the motor up about 5 inches, if it wont run over 50-55 with a 50hp with the right prop and hieght, I will be searching for a larger one. so dont make my mistake, and find a larger engine!!!!!!! plus, its alot of fun when you can accelerate hard to your top mph goal.

Hottrucks we are saying 40 mph is not fast

Nice Dreams
05-08-2008, 09:22 PM
Fastlane Id stick with a 40hp or below. These mini hawks don't carry weight well in the stern. God for bid you break down, you know how snotty the bay can get, that thing will sink in a heartbeat if you take a wave or two over the transom. Specially if you plan on having 2 people in the boat often.
put the gas tank in the bow and get a manual jackplate with minimal setback. then start testing, like harry said, be patient, and keep your eyes open you'll find something you can afford... Hopefully black

Nice dreams there is absolutely no difference in 45ci OMC motors 40-65 hp

the next smallest OMC is the 18-35 hp and they weigh about 40 pounds less

In all honesty for small motors and going fast there is no other brand to consider

My rig-
1984 "Kaama Edition" Mini Hawk Race Boat. Betty Cook did own this one and Ken from Mini Powerboats inc tells me its very rare.I have a 500CCA battery under the deck and a 3.5 gallpn gas tank in the rear compart ment. The motor is a 3cylinder 25 Merc that has an exaust leak under the power head. When I take the cover off it has tons more power becasue its getting clean air. Anyway, with the cover on the boat will just touch 40. Brett at Bblades has done a ton of chit to my prop and I have 5.5 CMC Setback/hydraulic trim. She is built like a brick house and Ive run it through a 2-3 foot chop flying nice n level. Also has a small hook Im going to fix this winter. With 2 people in the boat its lucky to break 35mph. Full interior as well.

She's on. Just need to button up the wiring. Starting with a fresh gas since we had the tank out to put the tunnel extension on. Also got the fuel pump slosh tank all setup, was short a few stainless bolts to get it all mounted but that will come tomorrow. Hey Fred the motor is running great, checked the burn a few times, it's right there looking good. Was spinning about 7000rpm just about home and the lower let loose. Have cracks on both sides of the case, no forward or reverse. Still got that one boxed up with the 1.87 gears in it that you wanted, I'll be shipping that one on Monday. Going to pull this one apart tomorrow, grind the cone off and send it up to you with a fresh case along with any other parts that may be good. I gotta get runninig again real quick

Pulled it apart, everything but the vertical shaft and the bearing carrier are toast. The dog is in 100 pieces, there is nothing left to the pinion gear, looks like an old lady with no teeth. Forward and reverse gear have less teeth than a redneck at a NASCAR race. The case is cracked on both sides.

We were on it pretty good, spinning 7K when it went. When the motor kicked up we lost the seal on the tilt ram too. I'm sending out the loaded Nitro today so you can swap the gears. I'll include this bearing carrier since the one in this case leaks a little.

This powerhead has a lot more balls from 3500 to 6000

My little cat makes me laugh all the time, even after this I still had a big smile on my face. Some things are just priceless :D

Dog, pinion and case (the epoxy if from the cone that I took off).

Nah, that was after I got done beating it. I needed the vertical shaft and when the dog went it rounded the nut that held the pinion on. This is what the case really looks like, both sides were like this.

Yet my new 625s are sitting in the garage because I'm having so much fun with this cat. :D The big boats are just too much work, I didn't even bother cutting the wrap on it this year, its just gonna sit on the lift. :o

Ive seen splashes sell for the 3k range but they had a pad and a 30hp (2stroke) (25) 4stroke max hp rating.

you would do yourself a justice making them 1.5 feet longer and 1 foot wider the max hp would double and i might actually consider buying one

OMC makes some SSTprops for them 2cyls, i'd start with a alu, then you'll have an idea of ware you need to be, 15-16" of pitch be a good place to start.

mr_velocity
09-03-2008, 04:29 PM
Hey Fred I got that drilled up 18 (I think) Chopper he can probably try. I think my 4 blades are probably a little too steep for the little motor.

Any word on the guts for the case. Finding when I run the fuel down and she lightens up I need the cone. She starts blowing out and I can't carry the bow, even with the motor all the way down. Gotta play a little more but she's a handful when running light.

Motor is running nice, definitely has a sound all its own. Everyone knows it us and most people think its much bigger than a 3 cyl.

If you're ever up this way you're welcome to take the prop and give it a shot. Its got a few holes drilled in the hub when I was doing some testing. My 4 blades are probably too big.

well wat ever u propp experts think best will help alot

Best bet is to borrow as many as you can and try. I tried some expensive OMC race 3 blade cleavers that didn't work great on my setup, have this chopper that I couldn't even get the boat on plane, settled with a 4 blade modified cleaver (told it looks like a drag prop) that Rich at leading edge worked really nice for me. Heck even try a stock aluminum prop if you can find one. I asked around a lot, I wasn't able to find anyone running a 4 blade on the little 13' cat, but I love the way it pulls when you crack the throttle.

whats the weight of the boat? Why not run an older Mercury 55h ? many props available, and the motor weighs 110lbs or so, if you add electric start a little more... If the boat isn't too heavy, and you have a correct setup with one person, you'll do 50, but it'll be noisy !

yachter55
12-06-2008, 10:43 AM
Funny you said that as I bought a 50 merc for it. went ahead and painted it white, mounted it and could not get it to run. It needed a trigger ,stator and some wires and had no trim and tilt.so a friend sold me his 80 merc that needed nothing but a boat to put it on.there is not that much of a weight differance between the two. as a bet from some friends that said it could not be done. The Bet was on and I got er done. On the first splash she sat 2"below the transom rub rail and filled the splash well.so I kneeled as close the wheel as I could and took her for a run.very unstable to say the least.she wanted to lay over on her side at top speed and pourposed all the way to top speed.Thank god it was flat water. went back to the ramp and collected my cash.:D so I built two stacking alum fuel tanks both are 10 gal.made the templets with cardboard and hot glue. made sure they stacked ok .The reason was dash to floor hight is short. since I built the tanks I added a drain tube at the botton. water in the tanks seams to be a problem around here.A tourq tammer helped the leaning to one side buy 75% the stacking tanks made her the true offshore boat she was ment to be.The pic you see is in real two foot lake michigan chop.I was cruising at 40.I was surprised at the dry ride.I took more pictures last week but the boat was embarrasingly dirty from storage.so im afraid to post.

I made a mistake with my stereo.when I was installing the speakers I was under the dash and never had it pumped up when I finished making the panels the speakers face each other ,being so close the sound bounces off each other.I was told to install a wedge shaped ring under the speakers so the sound wont bounce off each other.Havent tried it yet .let me know I used a hard wire remote so the radio wont get wet.I screwed the bracket to a piece of wood and used 5200 to the roof with a stick till it cured has not moved in inch. I used a jensen marine radio w cd,cheap used jensen 300 amp, best buy open product,6'' rockford fosgate /remot tweeter.sounds good when idoling around.

what kind of mini??????

fastlane35
02-26-2009, 07:59 PM
well alot of people with the mini hawks run around 40mph with a 25hp merc and suppoblisly with a 40hp you can do 60-70 mph

donziboy16
03-10-2009, 08:32 AM
**** im 16 and about 185 and we got a mini hawk with a 40 merc goin about 50-55 so i think the best motor for you would be a 40 merc if you like speed. but if just want it for pleasure put a 25 on it. (you might see 50-60mph out of a 40 with your weight) it also depends on your pitch of the prop and how much stuff you got in the boat like how many seats people and stuff like that. weight plays a very big role in boating. good luck

I'll get some pictures of mine up soon. Would love to see how someones floats in the water with a 50 on it. Anyone able to try a 25xs or 44xs? I think that these boats would be pushing 75-80 with a 44xs. Now that would be sick!

HPShadow

Any updates to these boats?

After seeing all the work that went into the 80HP, I am thinking I want to find someone to trade my 75HP for a 50HP.

I found a great deal on a 40 Mariner "YamaMerc" on Craigslist the other day.

It's now down at Lee Sanderson's place getting a once over before it gets clamped on the MH.

How about some of you guys get in on the microboats thread. I thought the mini hawks would be all over it.

Does anyone have any X-dimension measurements for the best setup on a Mini-Hawk?

I have a 25HP with no trim, just a few manual settings bolted to the transom now. The prop is way to low for what I think it should be below the bottom edge of the transom.

I have a 40HP Mariner (YamaMerc) with electric trim that I have not tried to install yet.

Ideally, I'd like to set up the Mariner on a jack-plate, but I'd like to know where to aim for having the prop shaft.

lets resurrect this old thread, anyone still playing with MiniHawks?

What size motor, speeds, motor height?

I picked one up this summer with a 25 Mercury. It's a great little ride and takes the chop pretty good, it gets all the love when you buzz down the river.

The motors mounted pretty low, prop shaft 7" below the hull, just ordered a carb rebuild kit, the motor is surging and I'm only hotting 30MPH. I plan to rebuild the carb and throw in some new reeds in the next week or so then retest to see what it will do before I upgrade the motor. I am not going to raise the motor for speed as I will be taking it off over the winter to install a Yamaha 40 I just picked up.
