They run great, I used to race one in the 90's and won the Round The Island Race once. What would you like to know?

Hey Jon,
You wouldn't happen to know anybody with one for sale would you? I've seen one in St. Davids but know there are better ones out there. My cousin raced A-class in a Phantom 16 and set the record. He was first back through the pylons but was over taken before the finish line! What motor did you run on yours and what speeds were you seeing? Any set up or running tips?

Drew, who is your cousin?
There is alot you can do with these boats to get them to run great, but you can also end up spending alot of money. The faster you want to go the more money you will spend this is a given (racing or hi-performance motto). We ran Evinrude 70 modified by Monty racing 2 1/2" manual jackplate approx 1 1/4 below bottom with a 13 3/4 x 24 cleaver, ran about 60mph. But if we had the money at the time I would have set up either modded 70 or a stock Tohatsu 90, solid mounts, lo water pic up nosecone, 4" hydro jackplate, dual cable steering or Sea Star Pro hydraulic.
With the boat I would have gutted and replaced the transom with a lightweight composite, rebuilt stringers & floor with Nydacore and properly balanced the boat so that when she launched in rough water it wouldn't drop her ass.
As for the Phantom up in St. Davids, I saw her and she is trash, someone has reconfigured the bottom and tried to ventilate it by incorperating a step  usless on a boat of this size and style. The only thing she is any good for now is throw on a stock motor (3cyl 90), paint the bottom, glass up those vent holes on deck and sides (what the hell were they thinking wiyh those), put a cooler in it, make it as comfortable as possible and go.
Props wise, mostly everyone ran cleavers, approx 13 3/4x23,24 or there about.
Hope this helps guys.

My cousin co-drove with Aaron Sims. His name is Chris/Bird depending on if you know him. The boat was white with a yellow nose. They ran a modified Tohatsu 90. I want the engine and will try to find it this summer. Hopefully one day I'll be able to run it in A-class again.

Would that be Chris Smith? The boat in the pic dosn't have a Tohatsu on it, that was a modified Evinrude 70 with an SST60 cover.
No one is allowed to run any modified 90s in A class, all the Tohatsu's that came to the island were pro-stock except for maybe external mods, like nosecones and sutch. No powerhead mods were allowed.
P.S. Nice pics.

These boats have been the champions of this class longer than any other boats as well as setting the most records.
The pics Drew posted here should give you a pretty good idea of how they handle and look. Thats a pretty good chop and they just blow right over it.

He's Chris Osborne. I was told they ran a modified Tohatsu 90. I was young when they were racing it so didn't get to many specs at the time. I can get the info on the engine tonight, but I'm pretty sure they ran it when they set the record. Maybe thats why it was so quick! ;) How did that engine in teh pics run? I'll speak to him tonight about it. That hull is now the blue one that 'races' lol..just in case you were wondering.

Those motors run great thats why most guys that ran in that class ran them, until they changed the rules. Can't say I know your cousin Chris, maybe by sight, but I do know Aaron, I used to compete against him. Good driver.

What are the rules for A-class now? Stock engines..90hp max, and 14' boat min?

Not sure the exact specs but stock 90 to a certain cc, eg. stock 90 Merc, Tohatsu, Mariner, Yamaha. Modified 70 Yamaha, Evinrude, Johnson. Boat size didn't matter, not sure about size now.

Yeah, she is being restored. I'll be posting a complete thread on the process when I'm close to finish.
