I have read that the 200 optimax actually produces 220 hp. Is that the case? I even saw a guy advertising a stock motor as a 220 hp.

Outboard engine mfg's have to stay within 10% plus or minus of engines rated hp. So theoretically a 200 could be anywhere between 180-220 hp.

Yes I understand that. I have read that the 3.0 L 200hp Opti puts out 220 hp just cannot remember where I read it at. I am pretty sure it was on this site???? Thanks for the info.

I'm sure the 200 Optimax does in fact put out more than the rated 200 hp, it's supposed to be a strong motor. I'd like to see some REAL dyno tests of all these engines just to see what they really put out.

I'm betting that it's 220 hp at the powerhead, not the prop. Just a guess....

That could be the case although todays engines are not tested at the powerhead are they? Go to this link and check this guys add out http://www.quinnsmarina.ca/mercuryoutboards/optimax_200.shtml

You're right, I think they are prop shaft rated now, the 220 hp could be a typo, never heard it refered to as a 220 hp before.

The Pro Xs motors have the extra 10% I believe. I have a new 175 Pro Xs, it supposedly puts out "around 192 hp"...I will say this, it is VERY Healthy!!

I would have to look back in my files to see if I've ever dynoed a 200 opti. All O/B HP ratings are and have been for many years @ the propshaft. I have dynoed several 225 opti's, 225 pro xs's, 250 xs's, and a pair of 300 x's, (the 300's today) with a calibrated Land & Sea Dyno. I have several 300 xs's on customer boats but have not checked one yet. Mercury has always been right at or above their power ratng, one of the other brands are always optimistic with their hp claims.
225 Opti 238 hp
225 Pro xs 248 hp
250 xs 272 hp
300 x 316 hp (317 lb. ft torque)
2.5 200 efi 210 - 218 hp
2.5 260 260 hp (peaks @7500 rpm)
2.5 280 280 hp (peaks @ 7500 rpm)
2.5 300 Drag 292 hp (These were the older pre svs drags) (peaks @ 7700)
