I have a 97 efi 3.0 litre merc , i took the guts out of the thermostats and put the ring back in . (motor runs fine) some one recently told me that an efi needs them or it will cause motor to run rich and posibly hurt performance . Is it true ? i,d like to here some opinions
thanx .............nick

Yes it is true, it can run too cool w/o thermostats and cause an even richer running condition than it already has.

On a domestic engine application you would be better with thermostats in the engine, older 3ltrs do run reasonably rich and running with out thermostats can make piston rings stick (carbon up):(
