'84 inline 4cly merc lower vs. '86 70 hp Merc??

Hey- Does anyone know if a gear case from a 1986 70 hp Merc is the same as the 1984 inline 75 hp gear case?

I'm surprised nobody answered this during the day, so this'll at least move it back to the top.

I'm not that familiar with the 80's small engines, but if the '86 model 70 is a 3 cyl then it won't interchange with a 4 cyl gearcase.

this may be a hp range more popular in the future, if a couple guys can go fishing for $60.00 all day instead of $600.00 in fuel and bring home some "tasty morsles", and afford it w/ 2 kids, BINGO! :D

The 86 and up L3 uses a gearcase that is completely different than the earlier 4 cylinder 75/80/85hp inline 4.

Thanks guys. I figured it was wishful thinking... saw the 70 gearcase for a steal and was hoping to pick it up as a spare... oh well...
