Can someone tell me what socket I need for the rod bolts. Are they metric spline or are they 12 point Torx or ? I need to purchase them and would like to know before I Go.
Thanks

Both blocks I have are Mercury. Yes that will help if I can purchase individual sockets rather than a whole set.

just make sure you get 12 point.

They are regular SAE 12 point on both light and heavy rods for the 2.5 260.
Make sure not to over-use Loctite on them, because if it flows over, it could end up on rod surfaces and bearings.

Sears usta' sell 'em individually. I think the only thing they had was the 5/16 12 point in quarter inch drive, so I used those with adapters. Maybe they had them in 3/8 drive also, but the wall thickness was too much. Anyway if you get the smaller ones get several because they DO crack with the torque you have to use. Good news is they warranty em, so you'll have new ones for next time too.

If you have a Lowe's in your area they carry SAE 12 points in 3/8 drive. So does NAPA. A "professional" auto supply house would also be a good bet.
A thin wall works best for the old style big rods but like Raceman said, "they will crack" if you lean on them much past recommended torque values.

Snap-on sells them individully....I tried a bunch, and got tire'd ov buy'in them bekause ov splitt'in(they gotta be thin).....Tha snap-on man wuz at my brothers shop one day and I had juss rounded a rod bolt bekause ov a split socket...I ax'd him if he had a bullet proof socket. and he kame out wit a thin, impact socket, 12 point, a lil longer than the short sockets, but not a deep well, and wuz 3/8" drive and are black!!.....I kan't remember what he kall'd them, but they were sum special application tool(tha story I got anyway)....It wuz like $20 each, but I have never split them, or rounded a rod bolt!!.... I don't have many Snap-on tools, kuz I kan't afford them, but theze sockets are well worth thier money!!

Those are sockets for working on turbines I got to get ready for Vidor but as soon as I get a chance I'll look for the number of them Rex is right they are a tuff sob.

I buy my sockets at Sears and Lowes , some of the thicker walled sockets won't fit in between the rod bolt and the rod cap ( SPS 3/8 12 point High Per rod bolts ) those I turn down in the lathe to make the wall thickness thinner so it will fit all the way down on the bolt to the flange, sometimes they will last torquing 2 to 3 engine before splitting , I buy them 10 at a time to keep trips to town down..If your running fishing motor rod bolts ( 5/16 12 point ) the standard Craftsman from Sears has always made the trip for me...
Good luck,

The Snap-On number for the 3/8 socket is FDHB120A These are some tough sockets and very hard to break. They are what my Snap_on man sell to GE and Westinghouse for turbine work. If you tell the Snap_on man this number I'm sure he can get you the 5/16 socket number too. Buy these and save some of that high priced fuel on all those trips back and forth to Sears and Lowes.
Greg that number doesn't work on the on-line.
I know the sockets, I saw them at Brendan Powers shop. I won't grind down my snap-ons so I go to Home Depot, and you can buy the Huskey parts one by one. 3/8 drive, 3/8 12 point. Like 2 bucks eack. Buy them 5 at a time!.

I got that number off the socket. Don't understand why it won't show up online. Maybe it a O and not a D check it that way. I have the socket here and looked at it with a jewelers magnifier it's very hard to tell what the second letter is, It's either a D,O, or a 0

Thanks for all the replies. I picked up a set from Lowes with an extra 5/16 in case the one in the set breaks.
