Question,
I have a 92 150XR6 that has oil injection. Do I need to change the gear on the injection pump as a maintenance item? I here people talking about removing the oil injection altogether and premixing. I would rather keep the oil injection on it if it safe. Any info would be thankful.

I Lost One On A 1998 200 After I Did Not Replace, Engine Ran For 10 Hours After Rebuild. I Replace Now On All The Engines I Rebuild. They Do Not Cost That Much.richard

No reason to change the gear but I would remove the injection if it was mine. Mercury makes a plug to replace the gear and then you just remove the pump and the warning module and add oil in your gas. My dad always said with oil in the gas if it's running you know it's getting oil. Keep in mind the warning alarm will only tell you the tank is low and not that the gear is broken and the motor is not getting any oil.
Sorry Mr. Tate, I didn't realize we were typing at the same time!

If your sensors and lubealert is working, meaning you get a chirp when you turn the key on I probably wouldn't worry. You might mark your reservoir so you can verify that it is oiling. You can also loosen a little phillips screw on the pump while it's running to check. Don't take it out just loosen, should ooze out. As to the gear replacement, if it's been real hot replace it, if it's going to be run over 6500 RPM do away with it.

On a fishin' bote, unless it's been compromised (not replaced at rebuild time, or overheated) the plastic oil drive gear is probably more reliable than the average fisherman.
If you're gonna peg the tach all the time like the lizard duz, you need more oil anyway. Ditch the auto-oiler and premix.
hope it helps

I lost the crankshaft gear (absolute junk, poor design) on my Merc Sportjet with 8 hrs from new on the clock. Never overheated, never abused. They also destruct on boats that sit around a lot, but I have no idea why. Two neighbors with easy use bassboats have shredded the same gear. All three stuck the powerhead. I was runnin about 3500 in the sportjet and it chirped once and I snatched the throttle back and cut it off. Stuck one piston. That injection system is the worst junk Merc ever built and it's not a matter of if, but when. I don't see why replacing the small gear would help. It's the plastic one on the crank that shreds. Take it off and mix and have a long happy marriage with your motor.;)

the gear you need to change as maintance is the one on the crank shaft. its plastic and causes all the problems. but thats like a major rebuild and not cost effective. if you look in the oil pump hole you can inspect the plastic crank gear. if there any signs of wear go straight to per mix.

Just like raceman said that was a poor design and it will fail its always best to premix,it's a jap pump with a metal gear bein driving by a plastic one what do you think will eventually happen, maybe that's why Yamaha went with a metal shaft and a bronze gear and put it at the bottom not in the middle of the motor and they seem to work fine.

Thought about it breifly with my 86 200 BlackMax until the cost machine kicked in ....injection or pre-mix. Get past the pre-mix brain block. It costs nothing to pre-mix, cost of a stuck piston........................................MASTERCARD MOMENT....PRICELESS!
