First, the facts. 1989 21' Checkmate Starflight.Heavy/wet foam removed from bow.1989 200hp Merc"fishing motor" 2 stage reed's,stack's and louvers on cowl. 10" total setback with CMC hydraulick jackplate. 23p D.A.H. mod Trophy.

Best speed last year 67 mph, fall, 50 degrees, dry, light boat traffic.

Yesterday,92 degrees, humid, moderate boat traffic. best run of 64 mph.
Then we did an experiment. Moved wife(110lb) to back seat, and cooler(probably 20lb) back seat. Best run 66 mph, chine walk, loose.Fun to drive, could drive it right through the chinewalk.
What am I missing ?I know heat will bring the power down, but why the weight transfer ?Experimenting with jack height, the higher I went, the slower I went. Water pressure ok even at the high setting.(18psi) All speed's g.p.s.
HELP ???

Ideally, you wnat to transfer as much weight to the rear as possible/practiceable. The more you move, the harder it is to get on plane, but the better you will run once on plane. I have pick up as much as 3 mph by moving my 40/50 lb. toolbox from just under the dash to just in front of the rear seat when riding by myself.

moved the motor up, you lost bow lift. By moving the weight rearward , you gained some of it back. Try MORE setback and a prop that has more bow lift.

Setback and a different prop. Running a chopper on the starflight hull does not do any better than a good 3 blade. I run a Tempest Plus and have my best numbers yet. I have a 92 starfight with 200 "fishing motor" cmc jack and 23p tempest plus. Around 67-69 mph. I could definitely tell the difference with the tempest prop, the bow really flies better and the whole rig feels lighter. I may try more setback soon. Ive heard 12-14 inches is ideal.

good luck

What kind of RPMs are you turning with that 23 Tempest on the Starflite? I've got very similar setup turning a 25 LaserII @ 5800 & 68 MPH. Bow needs more lift I think. Does that Tempest pull the RPMs down that much or are you spinnin' @ 6500 RPMs?

If my tach is correct, I am spinning 6k.The trophy was done by John at D.A.H, and he added cup for bow lift.I just need to drive it more. Also take the 20 can's of beans out from under the bow.
(when my wife unloaded our 24' Thompson to sell it, there was 20 can's of baked beans in the pantry.I couldnt carry all the stuff she had in it)

I spin about 6200 rpm and have little or no gas on board and empty boat with just me in it. I tried a 26 p chopper and didnt get any kind of gain. The tempest plus has more rake to the blade and lifts better than a trophy ( or so i have been told ). It seems to be the best all around prop for that boat. The local checkmate dealer sets up all new pulsare 2100 br's with 225's and tempest plus props. They run 23's as well and about 70 or so mph.

Vulture - I did try the trophy but ended up trading it to a guy for a 19 p ski prop. Tks though

For every boat and prop combination, there is a "SWEET" spot that yields the most speed and overall performance. If you have a hydraulic jackplate, you have the best chance of finding it. Those long checkmates love bowlift to run hard. As previously stated, weight transfer to the rear will definately help, so will a bullet on the gearcase which yields more leverage on the hull. Blueprinting the bottom will also enhance speed and driveability, depending upon how straight it is to start with.

Hey, Boatin70. You are on. You might like to try my DAH trophy and my DAH yamaha 23pro. We just need to get some water in the river.
I am turning wrench at EKM,out on west state street this week.

Ever hear of Columbia A/V.??
Well, it's gone now.
So I am looking.

Sound's like I am not the only one.

Stop by the dock sometime and have a cold one.Up past the boat ramp's at Atwood park, almost to the end of the long east/west run.Right hand side going north.
USA Flag on the dock.Green street sign on the end of the dock. Two Starcraft aluminum boats tied up,both have merc's.
