1996 2.5 200 efi surge

when i tun off the key the motor surges and then shuts off. any ideas? i pull the kill switch and it shuts right off like normal, but with the key it it revs and then shuts off.:confused:

Maybe it's not the engine, or could be...but sounds like your cutting fuel delivery 1st when the key is turned and dies from that...Try looking at the ignition kill feature of the switchboxes to see if that appears in order...and/or key switch. Remember, Mercury's can just about defy physics when it comes to possible failure modes.:)

ya i was thinking it could be a bad key switch. i just never had this problem before. i will go buy another key switch i guess.:confused:

I had a key switch go out on me not to long ago and it did some weird things once the intermittant problem latched solid.

thanks Russ ya i was gunna replace this one any way because it hangs up. you have to turn it back or it will keep the starter inguaged.

get the electrical diagram. the switch should ground the ing system when turned off just like the kill switch does. it sould like thats not happening. without the diagram in front of me i cant give you the points to check.
