Hey there guys, I just bought a used Merc 110, 9.8 HP (think it's a 1975) motor to use as a kicker for fishing with my ski-boat. I have the serial number (7094216). It needs a little TLC though, buddy I got it from said the driveshaft is striped from hitting a sand-bar, prop is good, but won't spin. You can fel it "jumping" inside when it's in gear and spin the prop. So basically I need to find some part numbers so I can get it fixed before the ice goes out & the fish start to jump. Also, is there a place that sells replacement decals? The cowling is pretty scuffed up, and I was thinking I should re-paint it, but I want the decals back on it.

Going by you s/n your engine is a 1977. Those engines are damn hard to kill. I have a 71 that keeps going and going. There are a lot of parts on Ebay for those engines Several years will be the same. Going by Merc it looks like from 73 to 79 those engine were the same. I think the main thing engines from 72 down will have different is that they came with Phase-maker ignition, They still had points. But the blocks and lowers will fit and so will some of the parts off the 7.5 engine of the same years.;)

Ok great. I was thinking it was a 75' because that is the date on the owners manual I got with it, but 75', 77' whats the diff? Don't matter to me a long as I can go fishing.

I took it apart last night, and yep, the 6-splines on the top of the driveshaft are stripped.....Got kinda late and didn't have time to go further, but I am really hoping the splines in the crankshaft are still servicable. Compression is good at 120 on both, and judging from observing the "wear" parts this motor is in pretty good shape mechanicaly. The cowling is pretty scuffed up though, she's gonna need some paint or it will look bad on my boat.

So, I have a few more questions. Are the 45 / 75 / 110 engine lowers all the same, with 6-spline driveshafts? What prop on this motor is better to push a 16 foot ski-boat for trolling a 2-blade or a 3-blade? It currently has a 2-blade. And how much gas does it burn? I have a built-in tank on my boat, I'd like to just suck off the main tank when using the kicker to save room and weight, but don't want to run myself short of fuel.

I can't swear to it but I think the 4.5 are the same? If your going gearcase shopping, Keep away from anything from back then that's been in salt water. You'll need to know if you have a long or short shaft. Hope your cranks ok those little engines are real tough! Keep junk out of the gas and rebuild the carb every now and again they'll run for 40 years easy.:D
