merc weak spark

My friend has a 1986 35hp merc. It spit and sputtered when he started it then it quit after it ran good for about 20 minites, then after he shut it off, it failed to start. Back at home he checked for vital signs, it had 150 lbs of comp. and was getting fuel. Would should he be looking at first?:confused:
