2.0 Merc Mods

I just bought a 78 Hydrostream V-King with stock rigging and a stock 175 v-6. It has a different jack plate. I am new to building outboards, but have been building 2 and 4 strokes for years. What mods are a must to make this thing come to life. I plan on shaving the heads and running a blend of race fuel. But what else will be a good bang for the buck. Velocity stacks, reed blocks, exhaust, nose cone, just wondering whos parts and what setups work good on these motors. I want to keep it reliable and still be able to keep the local lake racers at bay!
