View Full Version : Running alky in a 2.5 EFI?

Does anyone run alky instead of gas in an EFI motor? If so, what's involved in the switch?

On my other motors, not outboards, alky takes 1.5 the amount of fuel as gas. I'm curious if just replacing the injectors with units that flow 1.5x as much would work?

Thanks!

I've built several Alky motors in the past ( drag racing ) and a normally asperated engine can only make 6% HP increase in power over and above racing gasoline ( at least thats hat Brad at Kinsler fuel injecting told me ) I'f you changing to Alky to ofset the fuel costs the hassel of the alky engine out weighs the cost advantages IMO. Needle bearing engines don't like the water that the Alky engine are prone to bring along with it ... For power increase IMO a good "doped" racing motor gasoline will make as much as if not MORE power than the normally asperated alky engine will..Also takes special Viton "O" ringed pumps and larger injectors ( I used a larger Rochestor injector that I had to modify the block and I also had to fab a special fuel rail ) Pressure had to be upped to 60 PSI with an adjustable regulator and fuel line had to be increased to 1/2 ID sized...I do remember back in 1993 when I build 3 engine like that the parts were about $2000.00 + USD..I The Alky engine was thirsty also , a 1400 lbs modified production motor during a 1.4 Mile pass drank 1 qt. and 1 pt. of racing gasoline the Alky engine drank 1 Gal and 1 pt. of Alky..

From my experience with alky engines
Good luck,

Thanks Jay.

I'm not after any power gain from alky, a Nitrox system will supply all the power I'll need. I'm trying to decide whether or not to run a coolant system in my outboard powered sand drag trike. If I don't run a coolant system, I can fill the block with cement and gain cylinder stability for big shots of nitrous. The downside of that strategy is heat, a hard-blocked motor on gas can't make back to back passes. With alky, the motor will never get hot, my other alky drag racing machines stabilize around 150 degrees because the incoming fuel charge cools the block.

If I run gas, I'll either have to plumb a radiator for a coolant system or hard block the motor and let it cool between runs. It will only be running 20-30 seconds at a time, no coolant system is preferred due to simplicity but the ability to make back to back runs has me thinking about other options.

$2000 isn't too much, I'm spending more than that on the paint job. I think I'll hard block it and if heat becomes an issue, I'll give you a call.

Thanks again!

How about that turbo sand car you built. That picture must be laying around here somewhere? :D

I have seen this done before and it worked on V6 Mercs in off road buggys. Mount a small auto trans radiator with a electric pump. Use ATF fluid in it. They seem to cool pretty well.
