I just picked a 86 johnson 200 gt for $450 complete motor & controles, of course there is a reason it's only 450. The #6 piston has up and down slop in the cylinder, by this I mean "in and out" if the piston is traveling inward and you stop turning the flywheel I can push the piston in another1/8"-3/16" Im thinking It's going to be a missing rod bearing..$$$$$$$$$...any other thoughts????? no scratches at all on the cyls... what exactly is the GT package?

Oh yah it is a 3 1/2" bore looper...

Sounds like a broken wristpin or wristpin bearing. Does the piston travel up and down the bore when turning the crank or does it stay stationary while turning the crank? Anyways, you're looking at a new piston/wristpin and a bore/hone job. No biggie.

yes the piston does still travel it's full stroke,,but at about 1/8"before the piston is at TDC the flywheel gets very "tight" hard to turn ,as soon as the piston starts downward it feels fine again... isnt a wrist pin just about failproof, I plan on tearing it down this weekend

bearing. Probably big end but could be small end and or piston coming apart.
For $450. so what? Tear it down and do an autopsy.
What are your plans for motor? Huge potential for that motor if you want a screamer and have some time and $$.
It's a 2.7 liter with birdged exhaust ports which means the ports are huge!
That motor (GT) has the biggest carbs and tightest heads of anything to ever come from OMC.
"GT" also gets you stiffer motor mounts and louvers in the cowling which are becoming very rare.
Great score.

well I did an autopsy to the 200 gt today and just as I suspected #6rod bearing was completly siezed up and scalded the crank and rod. so I guss Im in the market for a crankshaft for a 1986 200hp looper. any one got one?????

I've got one, but it would be hard to hurt that crank if it was a fishin motor. I've torn a lot of OMC parts up but never hurt a crank. Post a pic of the journal. What are you going to use it for?

it is going on a fishn boat, nothin too radical, it has 1.875" carbs on it, is this normal? They seem a bit big.

Those are the factory carbs. Let's see what the journal looks like. You may be better off having it fixed if it's that bad.

Heads up with that model. Great motor but between "86" & "87" OMC was having internal problems with employees, product assembly suffered the brunt with employees over or under torquing bolts (connecting rod) they also sometimes would leave some extra parts rattling around inside (a bonus):D. We had a couple during this time frame come in new, un-box bolt on boat crank over fire and boom:(. I would highly recommend complete rebuild, then you would have one strong motor:cool:. Since you only got it for $450.00 adding price for rebuild you should still come out on top.
Good luck.http://forums.screamandfly.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif
