Hi. Can any one tell me if the Ailsyn zero weight gear lube will be ok to run in a lower unit for around 3 to 4 hours or will this be risking the lower unit?

i have found that in long run applications the merc hi po stuff is better unless u constantly check your lower unit.. the ailsyn is so thin if you loose a seal it will drain right out quick.. so if your dilligent about checking your lower ur fine.. if not i would run the merc stuff. i run the ailsyn only in race application just because everything is only run for an hour or so before it is completely gone over.. i run merc hi po in all race/pleasure applications. my 2

Mercman,

I run the zero weight for both situations (Drag Racing) and pleasure boating...same gearcase with each also. I haven't experienced anything out of the ordinary. I watch for chips (large or excessive) and water and so far 'zip'. For lake running Im changing it about 3 times in 6 mo. The gearcase was finally brokedown and looked over in great detail by Trae at Pearland last summer and said there wasn't a dam thing wrong inside there and was still set up very well with the critical tolerances and wear patterns with the gears. Back together and still running like hell since...

I 'd run the Alisyn zero weight for racing only and their thicker G.C.lube for long term recreational use. IMO I think if you quizzed them they would suggest the same.. Call them ( Alisyn ) they are Support Vender's on S &f and get the information straight from the manufacturer, they are get folks to talk to...

To all screamandfly members:

We have many users that have run our ProGear Type I as their regular lower unit lubricant for many years with no reported wear or any other issues of any kind. At the same time, there are folks that are hesitant to use it for recreational use due to its very light viscosity. Basically our position on the subject is as follows:

1) The ProGear Type I is specifically designed for those who demand maximum performance. It reduces hydrodynamic drag in the lower unit by 30% - 45% compared with any other products on the market. We have developed a proprietary additive package that allowed us to engineer a very light viscosity oil that is capable of carrying the same kinds of gear-loads as regular 80W and 90W gear oils. This translates into slightly more power to the prop with a resultant small gain in both top speed and acceleration.

2) If a gain of one or two miles at the top end does not matter to you and you want ultimate protection, ProGear Type II, 80W is the product to use. (please refer to Mr. Jay Smith’s comments earlier in this string). Using the same additive package as the ProGear Type I, this 80W gear oil will carry the same loads in standardized tests as other 140W oils. We have many offshore customers that use the ProGear type II running well over 1000 HP through their drives.

3) Finally, all of our gear and engine oils are specifically designed to be mixed with one another. We have many customers that blend their own lower unit oil using a quart of ProGear Type I and a quart of ProGear Type II. They are mostly recreational users that like to run very hard on occasion. This mix reportedly gives them slightly better acceleration and smoother shifting from neutral.
