I was just out changing my water pump impeller on my 300x lu and when I pulled the impeller housing and base plate off I noticed that the housing where the drive shaft goes into the lower unit is out of round? I have attached a picture. Is this common, does it need to be fixed or is there a seal below this?

840836A 2, it's the upper carrier assembly, It's probably OK but if it were mine I would change it. The out of round could indicate a worn upper taper bearing.

that is the seal into the lower... i would change it. the part isnt that much money... that way you know you will be keeping the water out of your gear case... dougrussell is prob your best bet... if you dont have a friend who is a dealer or somthing...

it is deff the seal to keep the water out... there was a recall on those by merc if i am correct the new style has to have a hole drilled and tapped to keep the seal from popping up.. looks like yours is original.. someone else must know about this... i dont think i am going crazy... its real easy to do... i think the problem was that some of them would push up into the water pump and cause them to fail and or fill the gear case up with water... i would look into it..

Motor is a 2001 with right at 100 hours. I did have a bad shift shaft seal 2 years ago but no problems since. When I changed the LU gear lube the other day it looked good, it had a slight off blue tint (almost a blue green) to it but no water visible? Where can I find the part # you mentioned. Does anyone know where to see an exploded view of a sportmaster?

Go to www.madefi.com and buy the billet 4 seal holder from wayne taylor that stock seal holder only holds 2 seals and there junk. Sooner or later you will get water in the lower unit and you know what that leeds to

Go with the Mad 4 seal carrier. They work great...

I was considering buying the wayne taylor billet seal kit before. Does this fix the upper carrier assembly as well or do I need to replace that part before I install the kit from taylor?

It's the same part. Carrier assembly/seal kit whatever.
