Just checking to see if anyone has heard that Mercury was going to bring back the 280 in a ros version only in a limited # and sold as race only no consumer version and no warranty.. Anyone know if this is true.

I always wondered, what constitutes race only? I mean, can any one buy a "race only" engine? or do you have to jump through some hoops?

You probably just need a big enough checkbook. I hope this move "motivates" BRP.

Not too hard to figure out "race only".

One of the rules when the EPA emissions stuff was discussed at the APBA annual meeting was that in order to be considered a "race" motor, it would have to come with a non-shiftable gearcase. I don't know if that's still the case, but that was when they said they would only be offering the Champ motor with the SpeedMaster gearcase and 12" midsection as the only race motor.

That's interesting.

do race motors have a neutral? i could see no reverse. but not being able to stop the prop when the motor is running seems dangerous:eek:

The EPA stuff works on a credit system, they sell enough clean motors to allow the odd dirty motor to be sold.
They never had to stop production, and for all intensive purposes never did. They only stopped on complete motors, you could always buy a drop on, mid, cowl and gearcase and have a complete 2008 motor.
What drives me crazy is that in Canada we have no EPA.... so why the hell don't the sell them here?, I mean it isn't like they aren't making a fortune on them!.

Offshore racing would apply I would imagine and they are always shiftable motors.

True pure racing lower units--what I learned to call speedmasters--have no neutral--if the motor is turning, so is the prop. That allows a very small pair of gears in the lower unit, since there is no clutch, and a very slim unit.

as far as what "race only" means, used for closed course sanctioned racing events, not for general use on a public waterway, and again, it has to do with emisions at the moment, the non shiftable gearcase doesnt really stop somebody from running it for recreational usage,IF they can build a 1 star rated hipo engine, it would be legal in 49 states, for recreational use

I was told by a mercury rep at the millwaukee boat show that mercury could sell 2.5 motors because they have enough green points but there wasn't a big enough market for $$$$ compared to there big block program and we needed to WRITE NOT CALL RICK M OR FRED K to get any results.

Has there been a date associated with the release of the new 280, and how about any updates or changes from the 280 of the past ?

thanks, Russ
