My favorite: Long Island police are among the highest paid in the country - Suffolk County cops reach top pay after five years of service, which was $105,000/year - that was back in 2001, so it's likely more now. What's funny about that you ask? That the PBA asks for donations. LOL!

While I agree that the cops are making alot (compared to NYC cops). The main problem is the school teachers, school boards driving up property taxes. Over 67% of property taxes go to schools. When there are hundreds of teachers making the same amount as cops (105k) thats a little out of control. Every year many of the school budgets are defeated but taxes go up anyway. You know the teachers aren't going to give up a raise. Anyone who has read the local paper here on the Island has seen nothing but stories about corruption in many of the school districts. The latest is lawyers who work for law firms that are on retainer with school districts also collecting salaries from the same school districts so they can collect a state pension. On of the lawyers worked over 1200 days last year!!! How the hell is that possible and how did it go on for so long!!! Talk about corruption, the good thing is now the FBI is investigating. Also many of the school districts are having their finances looked at more closely. I'm sure alot more mis-spending is going to be uncovered. With all this and more that has yet to be found the first thing that these theives that run the schools say is that they will have to cut after school programs. On long island is not about "the children" its all about how to rip off the tax payers. Its NOT the Police. Its the schools......THATS where the problem is!!!

Unfortunately, the taxes are starting to go crazy everywhere now. I bought waterfront property two years ago on Lake Murray S.C., within two years the taxes have tripled. The sad part of the story is when I can finally retire, I won't be able to afford the gas to boat which is why I bought there in the first place.

Oh well, I have to go to work now, so I can pay my HIGH taxes here on L.I.

teachers deserve to make good money , if they teach the kids . how many of us had the fregging dopey teacher that just had a few more years to go but had no clue to what was going around them . jerry has a problme with cops , not that they make too much( which they do ) but they only have to work for 20 yrs , that should stop . if anyone on longisnal read the paper this week about one of the lawyers in the scandle asking the school to make her full time while she was only working part time so she could get more in her pension . well who ever approved it should go to jail and she should too !!!!!!

Try to get a job with those depts, must be at least 500 who apply for just one opening. Hey just look at my NJ Tolls thread and see what's in your future. Or go To Steve Lonegens site and see all the goverment waste here in NJ.

Jerry my hi school english teacher would just hand out reading material, no text books or lessons! She was about 75 yrs old and had about 45 yrs at the school, they couldn't get rid of her. One girls gym & health teachers main lessons were why you shouldn't like boys. The parents would go to the board of Ed meetings to try to get her fired but the school did nothing. And this teacher really went to the extreme, far beyond what we would call PC today, I guess radical would fit her!

Jerry, I here it costs you $8 to cross the bridge now! I wonder where all that $ goes.
BTW, how do people in your area feel about all this tax and spend stuff. Here in NJ I would say that most people are somewhat glad to fork over 50+% of there $, they are brain washed into thinking that they have the best of everything, such as schools, police protection, fire depts. and so on!

You know Jerry, it is for around here at least when they tell you they need more $ for say the roads, building schools and all those other things and then they spend it on something else and then come back a few yrs later asking for more!!!
Here in NJ that took the motor vech fees and gas taxes that were mandated for the roads and spent it the general fund on other stuff. Then they say we're so far behind that we need to sell the state assets.

BTW, how many folks realise that NY & NJ should have had the lowest taxes in the nation, that is before we forced mfg. companies out due to the tax burden. Look at what we had 40 yrs ago as far as tax recipts from all our commerance!
