Louisiana and we`ll show ya how ta make shark gumbo.

The fatality was actually in the Bahamas.

Sharks are a common occurance here. Dummies who swim with them will get eaten. Funny thing, people here will not swim in the freshwater everglades in fear of getting eaten by an Alligator, but have no fear of sharks in season.

I have had a couple brushes, but every time it has been because I or someone I was with was doing something really stoopid. I not afraid of them, but respect them. However, u can put me in that fresh water/everglades category, I am not a fan of gators or moccasins. Guess it depends on what you grew up with and how much exposure you had to it since I have friends who could care less about gators but freak when they see a shark.

Bull, there is not a lot of love for the sharks down here, even where there are rules, no one is picketing to save them. Actually its sad, the long liners have all but wiped out lots of shark populations. It has a ripple effect too since they are the top of the food chain and keep other species in check as well as act as the ocean's garbage disposal. I can remeber taking my whaler shark fishing when I was in my early teens and always caught a lot of fish and usually did not have to wait long (no chum, no working the tides, just drop it down). Now i use chum, pick tides do everything when I take someone out and it is hit or miss. It is a slow news week, there will always be sharks around the coast, mostly they do not bother us, and there are a lot less than there used to be.

Not as big of a problem as the northerners like to beleive.Yall dont know what to do when you come here and see a lizard on the ground either:D .Been here 30 plus years and never knew anyone that has been attacked.Sure it happens but mostly on the east coast along the inlets like Sebastion and the surfers are the ones that get it the most. They are quite common over there.I am not affraid.I swim in these waters year round.Dont wory come on down.I have sen the arial shots as well. Its only during the time of year when they are migrating south to the warmer waters.:)

The way I see it is like this.... you figure there are probably a hundred thousand people in the water at anytime during the day and only a couple get biten a year... pretty good odds that you never get biten by one:D

I went to CNN headline and read the whole story and it said they were out on a trip to photograph sharks up close.... they were chumming them and feeding them to get close:eek: ... and they were not using a cage to protect them.

I have a few surfer buddies that have been bitten before. Never anything that required more than a few stitches. On any given day you can take an airial shot of the beach and see dozens of sharks along the coast. Some within 30 feet of swimmers. I'll take my chances with the sharks before I go near any gator or swim in the 'glades.

Side note of related info: In the summer of 2001(must've been a slow news period) there were multiple stories on the news pertaining to sharks and shark attacks. Apparently after the 911 terrorist attacks, all the sharks stopped biting people because it took almost 8 years for the news propaganda to start again.

Sharks are not vicious man-eaters that need to be exterminated. Fish already made the point about how they are essential to our eco-system.

Funny, sharks eat FISH. Yet he still defends them.:D

I believe you are more than twice as likely to get struck by lightning.

Hahaha! :D like I mentioned in my first post, never had a problem that was not caused by me or someone i was with doing something stupid.

I just saw the report where the recent death was a guy who did one of those thrill dives where the prompter pours tons of blood, chum, and dead fish in the water to attract sharks, and then these knuckleheads get in the water with the sharks with no cage.
