Jeep gurus! wrangler transfer case jammed?

my boys got a 89 wrangler in great shape but after beatin on it for a while its a real pita to shift the transfercase in and out of 4x2, 4x4 4low. no matter what, could be rolling forward, backwards, stopped still dam near impossible. Transfercase is a np231 and the jeeps a 4cyl 5spd. the 4x4 light comes on and it IS IN 4X4 when you get it in but its a real crap shoot. Some times you get lucky and it pops out but its very very rare :rolleyes: would appreciate some insite on this Heep :D

Just play around with the linkage a bit... if you cant figure it, just swap it out.
I tore my np231 out of my jeep this year. I got one out of a 99 XJ with 90K on it for $100.
Just make sure that you get a 21 spline case. Anything after 93ish will be a 23 spline

also has to be from a 4 banger. bigger input on I-6....

roll foward put in N....try it, back up put in N...try it.

make sure he doesent have something hung up in it.

This looks like a dead thread, but pulling the case out and lubing the shift linkage as well as the shift rails often helps.

Anything after 93ish does not mean 23 spline.

4 cylinder wranglers are 21 spline
6 cylinder (4.0's) is 23 spline
Can't recall off hand what the 4.2 liter 6 cylinders were, it may depend on if you have the ax15 or the puegeot transmission.

XJ's should be 23 spline behind 4.0's

2.5 and 2.8 v6's are a crap shoot, some will be 231's and some will be 207's.
