I have a 2.0 150 mariner I am interested in opening the exhaust. To come out of the lower unit. Were do I drill the hole ? what size ? Is there any downfalls to this ? Thanks S&F

You might take a close look at your mid. More precisely the rectangular holes towards the top just under the cowl skirt. I have an '89 2.0 150 fishin' mota and these holes are open from the factory in my mid. It has, however, had the can removed. Anyway, without a can inside, the exhaust exits these rectangular holes while at idle and sounds really nice w/o being too loud.

Yep, But all your gonna do is make noise and weaken your mid.

I understand that they all have the rectangular "hole". What I'm not clear about is wheter or not they are actually opened up from Merc. I know mine is, but I was told it is not typical. Not sure about just drilling straight through into the "can" itself.

It won't weaken the mid if the rectangular holes are already open. Again, mine were from from the factory. Drilling the can (if that's even an option) can't have any structural effect, can it? I'm not sure if drilling the can from the outside is even an option, though. Your right about just making noise. I can't see any performance gain being had whatsoever. I do like the sound of my engine, though.

When ya put a CLE on a performance mote witout tha short mids, the larger bearing carrier would block the exhaust az to give sum problems, so mercury sent out a bulletin to drill 4 1inch holes in tha lower unit(2 on each side)...Mine haz been drill'd since 1991, and iz still in service...the holes are placed 1/2" apart wher tha exhaust enters the LU, and this method don't require removen tha can.....I also drill'd and tapp'd a hole between the 2 1inch holes so I can block them off If I so desire...sumtimes silence iz nice:D

I don't have access to my pics(My puter iz down at the shop) or I would post a pic...

Sounds like what I wanna do post the pics when you get a chance...My motor is a mutt the rectangle holes at the top are under the cowling skirt so It may not be able to exhaust well.. I am looking at alternative instead of modifying my cowl
