Center steer, about 1/2" above and 4" back is where I ended up for straight line gofast. Near stock 1978 140 would pull a 28". Take it easy on the trim button and watch for gusts and rollers.:)

Thankz Barry, But it will not be a "go-fast" boat...It will be a stockie 140 and will be a cruiser for ralleys, and carry tha flag for races, etc....Performance ain't tha priority heer...We wuz wunder'in like wher ta put tha battery, how much set back(if any) etc....Tha closer we nail tha balance to start, tha less time and holes will in tha lil bote....I'm kinna used ta short, lite boats, but not lil Hooker botes....
Raceman, U should have sum input on this...U at tha lakehouse, or Greg still got tha UGLY block on??:D

I've never liked setback on a 16 Ally. (or a 15 for that matter) I ran my first 16 with a 1500XS, T2, 15" 2.4 V6, and Champ length 2.4. Previous owner of this boat had a 20" 235 on it. They were all run flat on the transom. The 16' boat had more lift built into it the way the deck flares on each side in front of the driver. (look under the rub rail in this area and compare to other small ally's ;) )
My present 16 with a 1500XS is directly on transom too. With a 20" motor you're gonna need to be in the ballpark of 6 1/2 to 7 inches off the transom (up NOT back), so you might want to consider a shortened mid also.

Thanks Norris. Yea, I can see where this thing would make a lot of lift.
I can't see this going to a 15". This is a project boat that is running on a shoe string budget.
So where did you guys have your batteries and fuel tank?
Thanks for your replies!!!! :)

I always ran the battery and fuel in the back. We could water ski with it and was OK as long as you were careful with reverse. It was up maybe four inches then with a two inch jack plate, no cone. Ran low 70s. Flat on the transom would be better. With a 15" engine, perfect. Bilge pump is a good idea.
Looks like you have the opportunity to add a couple of inches to the transom of that one without any extra work. I would add maybe three inches in the center then just deck the last couple of feet over flat with the insides of the tailfins. Make a flange, no splash well. Just a suggestion. But you probably have it done by now.:)

LOL! Not done yet. ;) You talking about a couple inches in height, right? If so I have already cut the coosa.... :(
Not sure about axing the splash well... I had thought about it..... :)

I had a 15R for a season with a 1977 140s. the jack plate was a one inch plate that had mounts on the transom and pins that could be used to adjust the engine height but kept it right on the transom So setback was about one inch. The 140 had cut heads for .040 clearance, 1 3/8 carbs and open exhaust. Stock everthing else, no nose cone just slotted lower water pickups and filled uppers. The best all around prop was the 25 solid hub OMC Racing cleaver at 7000rpms but the best top end setup was a cut down Merc 30 cleaver. I could spint it just to 6000rpms if I had enough lake to let it eat.
Wish I never got rid of that one.

fc you need to get Alan "aero" butt in gear and have him get his 14' ally together and we can bring all of our little allys to one of the rallys.

I have a 14' ally that looks just like yours but, shorter. When I first set mine up I didn't have the money for the short shaft so I made a jackplate to keep the motor as close to the transom as possible. When I changed to short shaft boy that is the way to go. My best prop is Wayne Weeks offshore 26 for drag racing and a 30 pitch offshore look alike for top end. Oh yeah my stock 140 was quickly transformed to a Week's hotrod. These boats are a blast. My set up with the stock 140 to the best of my recollection would run 68 to 70 with a small ear 26 chopper. My battery and fuel tank was right behind my butt. The gearcase split the pad. Listen good to Norris he has a mountain of knowledge with these things. They will blow over!!! I know three people off the top of my head that blew them over with v6s. Ask Norris what they will do.

Who made this? Have any pictures?
I need something similar for the Vandal. I could have one made but I think it'll get expensive.
CMC makes a non-adjustable transom extension (basically two pieces of angle) but I think it requires some additional holes in the transom.

Who made this?
Some one hand build the one I had. It was basicly a 1inch plate that slid into two L Stock to make U brackets and welded together. Adjusting height ment the motor was lifted, in my case by hand or a Come along and a tree. Their were a series of holes drilled for adusting different heights. I used bolts to secure it but it had Detent pins when I bought it. It was secured to the transon via a non standard bolt pattern on the outside of the U brackets. It was Awsome for giving 6 inches of lift and almost no setback but a pain to adjust and didnt offer allot of adjustments options. The best height was found by having to drill my own holes...

Thanks for the input guys. Much appreciated!!!
Some one makes a jackplate that is about an inch. Set up kinda like Laker's, but adjustable with all thread.
I'm gonna call Hydrodynamics next week and see what they have laying around. ;)
James, that sounds like a plan. I have a '79 140 with low, low hours on it that I was looking for a 14' or 15' Allison to put in on. Just too many irons in the fire at the moment. :o

Marine engineering made a plate like that in the 70/80's...it was like a 1/2 motorplate that slid in between 2 C channel like end pieces. They also had a hydraulic version of it. I'll look for some pics.
I have a set of Allison 4in setback plates that you can flip around and the offset is more like 2in. I was toying with the idea of throwing it on my 15R.
Bobs makes a convertable plate like that also, 2 or 4in offset.

I have a 1972 15' Ally project. I ran it last season with a 1973 stock 115 Johnson with trim and tilt. The motor was on a jackplate with 5 1/2" of set back. I havent tried the boat with the motor bolted to the transom. It has center steer with the gas tank ahead of the battery on center, prop shaft about 3" below pad no lwp. The only prop i ran was a 23 sst and the motor was reving to high. A very fun ride and a very forgiving hull and could be trimmed to the sky.:p http://aycu31.webshots.com/image/44950/2000080972507045867_th.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2000080972507045867):D 59 mph gps.http://aycu19.webshots.com/image/42218/2005496197867209514_th.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2005496197867209514)
