I will be adding a Racor fuel/water separator. Do I still need the stock fuel filter?
Thanks in advance

On a carb'd motor with the thumb sized screen filter, I chit canned it when I put in a Racor filter and bypassed the bayonet.

When there is a filter on the motor (usually before the fuel pump)
it will filter out anything that may travel to that point from the fuel line between the spin on/racor filter and the second fuel filter
The quality of hose on the motor is different than what is in the boat.
FOR EXAMPLE ( ive seen this many times)
There is a racor filter on the boat
There is no filter on the motor
The vinyl lining on the fuel hose ( after the racor, in the boat) starts breaking down and cloggs up the fuel pump ,carburetors ect...
In this case not having the second fuel filter cost this guy a carb and fuel pump rebuild versus a $5 filter replacement

Also, some motors can't handle a Racor or any filter before it.....what motor do you have?

I have 2001 300X with a fuel separator right out of the tank, but then I put a Holley Red pump to pull the fuel through the external filter. That is the only way it would work. The engine pump does not have enough power to pull it through on it's own. And I kept the filter on the engine also. Chuck

I use,(as much as I hate to say yammys) 10 micron filter long model on all of my black motors. Even on my old 9.8 black motor has a yammy long filter on it w/o a holley pump and no problems at all with fuel. On a 2.4 merc I use one and it does have a holley pump on it. Have used this filter on 50, 85 black motors w/o holley pump. This filter seems to be the best on the market. No problems with water or sluge. Man I wish merc would make one. http://www.shortsmarinediscountparts.com/ebay/yamaha/marfueliltr.jpg

i believe that regardless of what is between the motor and the tank, mercury wants too see 3 lbs vacuum ( i may be off by a pound ) on the fuel in line , adding a filter , adds to that #...and they dont like a filter there....thats in the technicians handbook from mercury
it seems to me that when the boats are being rigged they all have a spin on filter in the boat with the exception of some boats rigged with Verados
the filter in the verado is 2 micron
AND i found that yamaha fuel filter interesting!
i seen one of them the other day and it seemed to filter the fuel better that the standard spin on filters i have been seeing

That would be 3 inches, not pounds :D

Thank you all for the interesting knowledge. I didn't think about the fuel pump's ability to pull the fuel through the filter.
I have a 1987 johnson 110. Will it handle the filter without an additional fuel pump?
Thanks in advance,

What brand filter head are you using with the Yamaha filter? What size are the threaded ports on the head 3/8" NPT or 1/4" NPT. I would guess that the ports are 3/8" for the filter to be able to flow 90 GPH.

i found that filter today in SIERRA
Hi perf 90 gals/hr at 10 micron
also looked and found that the racor 3213 is 10 micron .. Dont know gals/hr
regular spin on filter is 28-30 micron
Now you dont have to use the yammy filter if you dont want to

its all in your mind bro, thats just a 10 micron filter made by X and branded as a yamaha. sierra has them, quicksilver, etc. I happen to have one thats branded as a mallory marine... you just gotta find the correct one, because the short versions don't have the same properties as the long ones.

You can use either a Mercury or yamaha base. They use brass 1/4" NPT fittings with barbs which you can get at homedepot.
