need help on my lower unit

Hey guys
There is a friend of mine that he thinks is having a problem with his lower.He thought he heard a noise coming from it and when he looked there was oil coming out of the vent.....What should he do???????

Pull the drain plugs, drain the oil looking for metal and water. Roll the prop shaft in nuetral and feel for roughness.If you find metal or feel roughness, time to pull the gearcase apart. If you do not find any metal, you will need to remove the lower unit and find the source of the leak, most likely the driveshaft seal under the water pump.

or the shift shaft seal. what LU, sprotmaster or TM? he may have over filed the unit.
